Like the topic title says, I tried making ice cream today, and I failed horribly.

The ice cream maker comes in four seperate parts: the base that the container sets on, the container itself which you put in the freezer beforehand to make the mixture cold and ice cream-y, the lid that acts as the spash guard, and the paddle wheel that actually just sits there and doesn't spin.

So what ahppened was, after I mixed up the mixture I poured the now-mixed up but not-yet ice cream mixture in through the hole on the top of the base, and turned it on. What I had neglected to do was add the container that makes it cold! So there I was standing, looking at the machine running and thinking to myself "Wow, I barely even filled the machine up, I would need to quadruple this recipe to do that. Wait, why is it leaking down the sides? Is this lid not on straight? Also, how is it going to even....get it.....OH NO!"

So, to make a long story short, do any of you know how to properly clean out a potentially ruined ice cream maker? I bought it at goodwill, so I don't even know if they would take it back if I tried to return it.

Should be pretty easy just use hot water (obviously don't have it plugged in).

Because of condensation etc, I don't think any parts that could have gotten coated are not water proof (your putting a very cold part from the freezer in there and as it warms liquid would leak off).

So yeah, just unplug it and wash it out and you should be fine. If not...well.....live and learn and be glad you got it at good will:)

Also, some people will rave about home made ice cream etc. I have a similar type of ice cream maker as you for instance, but for the most part Tillymook ice cream (and a few other brands) are just as tasty or even better.

Good eats had an episode on making your own ice cream which inspired me to try it years ago. I was dissapointed over all, and reverted back to the store bought stuff. Yeah, you might make SLIGHTLY better ice cream at home, but honestly it's cheaper to buy it at the store (on sale of course), and WAY less work, and you know it'll taste great every time.

It's especially better after the first time, so unless your going to make your own ice cream every time you want a scoup, just go with Tillymook etc.

To be honest, it was more of a "I like to cook, what havent I done" thing. I only spent $10 on the ice cream maker and just looked up a recipe for it online. So far there haven't been any puddles forming underneath it made of left over melted not-ice cream, so...that's a plus?

As for just buying storebought, that was literally the first thing that went through my head as I was making it. "I spent how much on ingredients when I could have just bought a half-gallon at the grocery store?" Also, I've never heard of Tillymook.....here our choices are Edy's, Blue Bunny, Kemps and grocery store brand. I mean sure, I could go for the Ben and Jerry's, but it costs the same as a half-gallon and honestly, unless you want non-ice cream with every single bite it's not as good. My go-to is usually blue Bunny because they make an absolutely rocking vanilla bean ice cream, although I will admit to occasionally buying the store brand for their double strawberry.

Also, if you're wondering, I did manage to dump MOST of the ice cream mix back into the bowl and re-add it to the frozen cylinder to make the ice cream. It was just a simple lemon sorbet with non-frozen raspberries added in for extra flavor. It came out alright, but I'm not wild about the consistency. It turned out a little softer than I had expected, almost to the point of being frozen yogurt. I guess that's what I get for experimenting.

Here is a link, you can find it near you almost everywhere in the US (if there is a safeway near you they would have it).

https://www.tillamook.com/products/ice-cream.html

Now there is of course better ice cream, but.....like I just did the other day, you can get this for 2.99 a gallon (it's normally 5.99), and in my opinion, and many others, it's the best tasting store bought brand in that size/price range.

Gelloto etc can be tastier, creamier etc, but it's more expensive (considerably....often about as much for a pint at the minimum).

If you can find Tillamook ice cream near you, it's worth trying.

I made my own ice cream once when the machine was on sale and it didn't taste that great, so I never did it again.

It's quite possible it's my recipe or the fruit I was using that was at fault but I don't feel the result of making my own ice cream justifies the effort.

Unfortunately for me the nearest Safeway is several states away, although their website says my local cub foods might have it in stock, I might look for it when I get the chance. Speaking of looking for things, if you get the chance, and if your store carries it, look out for the haagen daz artisan pints, ESPECIALLY the banana rum jam! I'm not sure if they manufacture them anymore, they're not longer listed on their site, but it was an awesome flavor.

On the topic of gelato, iI used to buy...gosh what was the brand....it was pint-sized and came in glass jars and was about $6 a pop. I've never cared for gelato though, all the gelato I've had wound up with the texture of frozen water, more of a snow cone than actual ice cream.

When I got an ice cream maker I also got a Ben & Jerry's ice cream recipe book. I found every batch of homemade was much better than store bought of any kind. But it was also more expensive than most kinds.

I mostly liked it for being able to make other things. Like frozen drinks or sorbet or frozen yogurt. Or experiment with ice cream flavors you can dream of but don't find on store shelves. Those things aren't too expensive compared to what you buy, if you can buy them, and are much better

TC as long as you dump everything out and rinse thoroughly with hot water you should be fine. Let the machine dry for a few days. And don't forget the bucket.
