Brute Force
Killzone
Pariah
Haze
Resistance

There were a lot more than this. It was such a weird thing. I don't really hear that term for any game nowadays. Any game trying to call itself a COD killer would look stupid.

Brute Force was Microsoft. They didn't market it as a Halo Killer but they marketed it as their next Halo. Sorta like "if you loved Halo you're gonna love Brute Force!" They even had a tie-in novel just like Halo did.

Pretty obvious how that turned out

Wat, Halo was out there to be killed?

lol

It was a really weird time. Halo was one of the biggest franchises out for the time. But yet Xbox was no where near as popular as the PS2. So there was a demand for something else on that level.

Likewise on the Xbox nothing really came close to the massive success of Halo. So they were also constantly looking for another killer app on that same level. I'd argue they never really found one until Gears of War.

For the WoW killer thing i like how it started as "ok this game will be a WoW killer" to "don't worry, WoW is killing itself but also every other new MMO that sprouts"

Yeah Gears was the only xbox exclusive to reach Halo levels.

I enjoyed my 360 more than my ps3 but I'd never get an x1 over my ps4

They did kill Halo though.

Halo was successful because it was designed for consoles when most FPS developers at the time ignored that platform. When other devs followed suit people lost interest in the series.

It was marketed as their next Halo (keep in mind this was before Halo 2 came out).

QSh1P

It even has that same sorta blue HUD that Halo did. It really tried to ride the wave Halo made.

No single game really killed Halo. A combination of Bungie leaving and the franchise running its course have lead to it being past its prime though. There's no where else for it to really evolve to.

They've tried other stuff (Crimson Skies, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Kameo etc.) but none of them really took off.

There's also stuff like Azurik that just stunk.

Heh I'm guessing that issue had all that bullshit about 'Project Ego'

"If you scar a kid he'll grow up, start a group of bandits and want revenge and he'll still have his scar!"
"You can plant trees and carve initials into them and watch the tree grow!"
"You'll have followers that will emulate your style and try to be a hero just like you!"

In the end it was something even more boring and generic than Halo that finally killed it.

Yeah this. CoD is easier to casually pick up and play and be moderately successful in than Halo so everyone flocked to it.

Brute Force had the unfortunate issue of being made before Xbox Live took off. I remember eagerly anticipating its release and enjoying the shit out of it. Back before competitive online multi-player and linear action setpiece based campaigns became the bread and butter of console shooters, there was a ton of emphasis placed on AI. Brute Force especially benefited from that. Its entire single player campaign was built around streamlined squad based combat that demanded the AI actually pull its weight, and it largely did. I genuinely consider it a forgotten gem of the original Xbox catalog.

Halo died because COD. People grew to like loadouts, upgrades, and quick death more than Halo's slow purist arena shooting.

The Brute Force single player was okay. I had some fun with it. It never really reached the heights of the Halo campaign but it had some decent moments.

But they're lucky Xbox Live wasn't there. The multiplayer was absolutely broken.

The girl with the cloak ability could one hit kill everyone in the game. There was also a guy who had this lock-on psychic powers with infinite ammo who could kill everyone else with ease.

There was no reason to play as those reptile dudes. While they could charge people and one hit kill if you faced either of those two you were dead. If you faced the sniper girl her lock-on ability would automatically hit players in the center. But the reptile guys ran on all fours. So you'd get instakilled by the sniper girl using her ability since it was an automatic headshot. My friends and I basically banned characters until we figured out something else that was broken.

I don't think I've played a game with multiplayer this broken lol.
