I never got really deep into Sailor Moon so she could have gotten better by the end. But I remember on that show she was like a horrible character she was cowardly, ditzy , immature ect. While everyone else were competent heroes. That little pink haired one who lived with her for some reason didn't even respect her.

It's part of the tropes of that series.

Serena (Usagi? Is that her Japanese name?) starts off as really incompetent and you can't really see how she can handle being not just a Sailor Scout, but the leader. You do know that she gets there via the whole future her stuff, but you're supposed to sympathize with her (or her teammates) in her inexperience. The show moves forward with her overcoming that.

While not exactly the hero's journey, it is similar.

I would guess to give the audience someone to relate to in a coming of age kind of way. Usagi as the actual moon princess differs than her younger junior high days like night and day.

The voice her VA gave her was really grating though. Also liked the name Serena over Usagi.

Yeah Tuxedo Mask was always creepy to me. I don't know who old he was suppose to be, but he looked far too old to be picking on random girl.

Really he is just 17, he looks way older. He is still too old to be bulling a girl like that. But he just looked like he was like in his late 20s are at least in college.

I wouldn't go as far as bullying, but yes making fun of, mostly due to her grades and how she treats him.

Of course (spoilers) they eventually discover each other's secret identity and become a couple later on.

As for the pink haired girl that's Rini, Serena and Darien's daughter from 1000 years in the future. She's unaware they are her parents.

That makes sense while she's fighting Beryl, but by the time she's fighting the dead moon circus in season 4, she shouldn't be crying and stupid at everything

If it makes you feel better, it was during a plot the Black Lady plot where Rimi was vaulted into her adult future self and filled with extreme bitterness and hatred and decided that stealing Tuxedo Mask would hurt Sailor Moon the most.

Same. The DiC English dub had a lot of good stuff about it, like the music.

I agree, I liked the music quite a bit. For example, the music that was playing when Nephlite died was very dramatic and just fit very well IMO. Much better than the JPN version

The manga did it even better. Crystal has it's good moments, but also makes a few changes (like those made to the four generals) that no one really asked for and that didn't really improve upon the original anime, let alone the comic that inspired it.

A lot of the criticism of the original anime, including the slow character development can be chalked up to the show's format, which stretched the series out to hundred of episodes. By comparison, everyone is a lot more assertive there and all of the cast members get their moments to shine.

If there is one thing love about the anime, it's the Takanori's original score. The DiC score clearly only planned for like twenty episodes and reuses the same tracks to such a degree it feels like a cost saving measure. They have one track for each kind of moment, and that's it. Yes, there are definite tracks on the US soundtrack I like, but even listening to the whole CD, which I own, it sounds unfinished. The gap between these two bodies of work just becomes that much more inescapable when I look at the Japanese score, which stretches years' worth of composition across ten CDs.

its just all the other characters have more interesting personalities
its a problem with a lot of main characters
they have to be someone for everyone to be able to relate to so that keeps them from being as interesting as the side characters because they have to have the more generic personality traits.


anyway in the manga sailor moon is 14 and in middle school while tuxedo mask is 17 and in high school
so there is an age difference but not a major one.

in the anime sailor moon is still 14 where as tuxedo mask seems to have been aged up to be about 19 making their romance creepier

The show existed to sell merchandise, and was particularly obvious about it, so six chapter arcs got stretched into fifty episode seasons, with accompanying movies, omake, and a couple OAV episodes that didn't exist in the book.

He reminds her of her father in R and that's part of her attraction to him. But that attraction is not necessarily romantic, and she doesn't actually learn who Usagi and Mamoru are until the end of that season. That said, she's still majorly crushing on Mamoru in subsequent seasons, at least until she falls in love with a were-unicorn. So that hardly excuses anything.
