Been meaning to do this for 25 years. I only made it to shredder like once or twice when I was kid. This time I had ninja stars so I was able to just spam them at him and he can't move.

I'm not going to ask why Splinter becomes human again in the ending

Shredder had a retromutagen ray gun, when you defeated him Splinter was able to use it to turn human again.

I gotta do this sometime.

I got past the water level only several times as a kid, and didn't really figure out what to do after.

As a kid I could never get past that final hallway. For whatever reason I never used special weapons and thought I had to kill everything. It wasn't until I was a college student that I went back and beat it (with lots of scrolls and abusing NES screen mechanics). The difficulty spike at that part is unreal.

the best strategy I found for the final hallway was to just slowly creep the screen forward. This usually caused the flying laser guys to immediately retreat and maybe shoot one straight laser above your head

I think the furthest I ever got without Game Genie is the 4th level. The water is annoying but if you have a plan it's not so bad. But the third level is so big and it's easy to get lost and I keep wandering around in buildings full of strong enemies until I lose the good turtles and then I'm fucked.

my biggest problem as a kid was that I never switched my turtles to conserve health, I just played one until they died then used the next one and if I found a captured one along the way then cool

As a result I memorized the whole game and could always make it to the final stage but never quite beat it

now that I'm an old man and realize the folly of my ways I played it the way it was probably meant to be played this morning and finished it in about an hour.

Funny, I actually watched someone beat this game for the first time a week ago on Twitch.

I never got past the dam level myself, though I played this game when I was... 8? 9?

The overworld theme is still great today.

I know everyone says Donatello is the best because of his damage and reach, but I always had trouble using him because the hitboxes on his attacks were limited and he struggled to hit enemies approaching diagonally from above. For my money, Leonardo has the best coverage, followed by Michelangelo.
