You would think the positions are all well enough established already. But the massive deluge of hate mongering indicates that these is a strong deceleration in positions of hate that needs to be counteracted for people to continue to stay in that position. Or it's a sunken cost fallacy thing?

More self-validation than sunk cost really. If you adopt an extreme position that a lot of people dislike you for, you feel inclined to constantly "prove" how valid it is. Or maybe people just want to make sure their buddies don't turn against them for mellowing out too much.

There is also the same fallacy of "liberty" loving people who want everyone to be able to do whatever they want, but then those people might do things that you don't like and that makes you mad and want to force them to stop.

This is where the Horseshoe theory comes from. People on "both sides" who are really dumb and fallacious are actually very similar because they're too dumb to be different.
