http://reason.com/archives/2017/07/16/we-are-the-economy-they-want-to-regulate/print

Reason has been cucking it up quite a bit lately, but I do like this article.

It follows, then, that when politicians and activists call on the government to regulate the economy, they mean to regulate us. There's no economy to regulate. It's not a machine or a vehicle. It's an unending series of purposeful activities the logic of which gives rise to a process characterized by regularities. Hence, for example, the law of supply and demand. We can talk about this orderly process—the market—as though it were a thing, but we have to keep its metaphorical nature in mind. It's still only people cooperating with each other.

When market critics demand government regulation, they imply that markets are by nature unregulated. But we've just seen that this is nonsense. An unregulated market is a logical contradiction. That we call it a market indicates the regularities, or laws, just mentioned. No regularity—no market. There could no more be an unregulated market than there could be a grammarless language or a perpetually disorderly society. We would not call a population a society if it did not display a general order expressed by rules (written and unwritten), customs, and mores. Without such things, a population would be not a society but a Hobbesian state of nature.

So I figured the piss beer thing was mostly okay because at least they are dirt cheap.

But then I got to the grocery store and see 6 packs of bud light and miller for $8. That's $1.30 each. I got a 12 pack of Torpedo for $15, which is literally cheaper.

These beers are still competing financially with craft. They are completely doomed. PBR and such with be there to pick up their scraps.

It doesn't sell

The producers are inflating the price because if the drop it, they lose far more in brand value than they gain in sales. It's capitalist quicksand. They have no way out, other than the golden parachutes.

The only reason I even went over to the shrinking domestic section of the beer aisle was because for the first time I saw someone with a 6 pack of bud light. It surprised me a lot and I wondered why they got that instead of something else.

http://reason.com/archives/2017/07/18/men-as-likely-to-be-harassed-online-as-w

A new study released by the Pew Research Center supports what some of us have argued all along about online harassment: that it affects men as much as women and that the problem should not be framed as a gender issue—or defined so broadly as to chill legitimate criticism.

If anything, the study says, men tend to get more online abuse than women, including serious abuse such as physical threats (though women are, predictably, more likely to be sexually harassed). However, when people are asked about free speech vs. safety on the internet, women are more likely to come down on the side of the latter. Thus, it is very likely future efforts at speech regulation will continue to be cast as "feminist" initiatives.

I mean it's not? I literally never get bullied online because I don't willingly participate in cesspools. Yes white male so I'm at an advantage for sure there, but the overall point stands. The racism and sexism is gross for sure, but those are societal issues not internet issues. There's no reason to target the Internet for those, despite its propensity to make people more feel more free in their hatred. Issue is still getting people to not be gross, which only happens through in person exposure to the types of people they irrationally hate.

By this we can can conclude his detractors define success solely as "passing laws," yes? So long as there are new fun laws, the president is bomb.

also, southern is probably the best known alt-right person, so it's kind of inevitable that pics of her will show up when the alt-right gets discussed. not sure who else they could show. maybe milo, but he's a good looking dude so a pic of him wouldn't discredit the movement much either.

if that's the case that's a rather poor attempt because the alt-right itself will never shut up about him being gay. they always go "LOL THE LEFT CAN'T HANDLE THAT A GAY MAN IS RIGHT-WING AND CHRISTIAN."

This is insanely good, goes way farther than tit-for-tat. Required playing/reading for anyone who wants to talk about the prisoner's dilemma.

The interesting conclusion is that, given a certain level of miscommunication, there is only 1 viable strategy: Copykitten for low miscommunication, and Always Cheat for high miscommunications. If you yourself use any other strategy, you are literally wrong. And if your evaluation of the miscommunication is wrong, then you are also wrong.

I think it's very obvious which strategy is correct in the vast majority of interactions and society as a whole. The other strategy only works in highly controlled, isolated lines of communication (MSM propaganda etc).

Everyone is bad at communicating, but does that result in a net 10% of communication mistakes? Not really. The % is pretty low, especially since it's a two-way street so it's a squared relationship.

If you have a 50% chance of making a mistake, and I have a 50% chance of failing to recognize your mistake, that's only a 25% net chance of a communication mistake. If I train my ability to recognize mistakes, so I have a 20% chance of failing to recognize your mistake, then the net chance of mistake is only 10%.

So really, if you are good at recognizing other people's communication mistakes, you can very reliably assume a 1-10% chance of mistake in pretty much every interaction that you are a part of. Obviously it doesn't help conversations that you don't control, like mass media, but it's definitely a good place to start with your individual behavior.

And that's when talking with someone with a 50% chance of miscommunication, which is pretty extreme...
