http://www.breitbart.com/california/2017/07/16/low-california-birth-rate-endangers-welfare-state/

California’s birth rate fell in 2016 to its lowest level in history in 2016, according to a new report by the California Department of Finance.

“The birth rate declined to 12.42 births per 1,000 population from 13.69 births per 1,000 population in 2010 Census – the lowest level in California’s history,” according to a press release from the department.

Southern California’s cost of living also continues to outpace wages, and owning or renting a house to start a family now often requires two household earners.

Not surprised at all tbh.

That's why Californians don't mind illegal immigration.

Ultimately, sounds like far leftism is really going to drive California into the ground in the near future.

Putting aside the slanted breitbart bias, this bit is actually accurate and could very well be damaging to the future of the state.

It isn't weird, but it is a true fact that the cost of living in California is insane. Like someone else said, most people moving to California are mostly doing so because of the amount of job opportunities here (one of the major reason I moved). It's much harder to start a family in California then ever.

People in Cali just aren't willing to commute, which is why property is so unreasonable. They're 10th in the nation for average commute time (and really, only because of LA). If they were willing to live another 10 minutes away the number of reasonably costed options would skyrocket.

It's not quite that simple. Yes there are a ton of retail-level jobs in bedroom communities (which bring down the average), but California is a nightmare if you have a white-collar job in one of the state's job centers, like Los Angeles.

I live 100 miles away from my job. If I drive in at 3:00AM then it only takes me 2 hours to get there. If I start driving around 7:00AM, it takes nearly 4 hours in one direction. And what do I get in return for the commute? My 3,000 sqft tract house in the desert only cost me half a million instead of a full $1M in LA.

(Full disclosure: I only commute twice per week. I would shoot myself if I had to make that commute 5 days per week in rush hour).

It's the same story in the Bay Area. California's infrastructure is shit. And the suburbs are still pretty expensive.

Take a train or something. I am pretty sure there is public transportation in a big city like LA and the surrounding area.

I'd have to drive at least an hour to the train first. Also, I don't expect the planned high-speed rail station to actually be built in my lifetime.

Ride sharing companies have tried and failed to provide a solution.

Tesla is my only hope.

Millennials are migrating to the bigger cities because there's no jobs in rural America. The trucking industry keeps rural America alive. When trucks become automated, areas like Los Angeles are going get worse. Big cities are congested and it doesn't look like millennial migration is stopping anytime soon. It's only begun because millennials are at that age to leave the nest and baby boomers are dying off.

Not in the areas where there is heavy demand for housing (SF Bay Area, LA area, etc.)

There's plenty of land in the Central Valley, but people are moving out of there and into the cities. You know how with the industrial revolution farmers and rural populations kept moving to the cities? That's still happening.

This has a lot of truth to it, but people need to understand that it's essentially an inevitable aspect of modern civilization. Something like 50% of Americans used to be farmers. Now it's what, less than 2%? I haven't looked up the stats but that's something I remember hearing once. Human civilization is becoming more and more centered around cities.

That's not what the issue is, the issue is that population growth is essential to a lot things like our welfare and social security systems, and if Cali wants universal health care and shit then population growth is essential for that to not fall apart because if eventually you have older generations not paying into those systems and not enough young people paying into them, then everyone involved is fucked.

I don't understand your beef with California. California has quite a bit of conservatives. California tends to lean red with the exception of the presidential elections. Liberal cities in California skews the political geography and that true everywhere across the country. Illinois is a conservative state with the exception of Chicago. And most major cities in Texas are liberal. You can't pigeonhole an entire state to a political party.
