Like growing up in BR where LSU is many people were more passionate about LSU than the Saints, but just go an hour away to, say, New Orleans or Lafayette the passion for LSU is already noticeably smaller and many would be way more passionate about the Saints than LSU, many often despising LSU. I'd also add that because of the lower defensive skill/overall skill, mens college football has a variety of different system that don't work at the pro level, which makes it different to watch. College basketball isn't like that, its just worse basketball. NCAA college ball is mostly ignored outside of a few major schools until you have the tournament (where the format and stakes carries the sport more than the execution).
