They've been hinting that the Doctor could be and was at some point in his youth a female for a long time now. This isn't something that they just pulled out of their asses.

Yup, on Matt Smith's (11th Doctor) transformation, he starts touching his hair as he finished transformation and he begins to scream because his hair was so long, he thought that he turned into a girl, and Master/Missy (The Doctor's arch nemesis since childhood) hints that the Doctor did turn into a girl once for a while when he was a kid.

It was not only inevitable, but all the hints were extremely well-put throughout the series, I'd say it's about damn time it finally happened, such a major change was deeply needed, the last season of the show was beyond boring, I genuinely considered dropping the show for good if the new upcoming era doesn't shake things up.

I did get the impression that the Doctor doesn't exactly enjoy turning into a woman, it'd be interesting to see if she's going to complain about her new body for a while throughout her first season, or she'll embrace it, for the sake of lore I hope that she whines about being a woman for a bit before she gets used to it.

If you accept the last three to four years as "accepted lore." That's pretty much a drop in the bucket of a 50 year canon. So... I'd be careful saying that it's "accepted" or "established" lore. It's really just something that hit mainstream canon in the last few years.

This being the light hearted science fiction comedy show that remakes and retcons its own story basically every single episode, where literally anything imaginable is not off limits.

Really funny though how some people are suddenly outraged over this because they want an opportunity to cry "damn sjws ruining tv again!" The daily mail comments were a hoot.

I think that's because people didn't want the series to lose it's way. They wanted the show to stay somewhat grounded in it's roots (especially after the plot details for the American version was leaked). The show has been drifting for awhile now. At this point it's almost more Harry Potter than science fiction. The sonic screwdriver has pretty much become a magic wand. Now they're so out of ideas that they've resorted to flat out stunt casting, you almost have to ask "what show are we even watching anymore? Hermione and the Magic Cupboard?"

I think it's time for this version of Who to end. Wrap it up. Capaldi's run would have been so much better if they had been building toward an end. Let Big Finish have it for the next decade and then come back fresh.

The series losing its way has nothing to do with the sex of the Doctor I feel, and I don't feel this was necessarily a stunt. Steve Moffat and his weird sense of storytelling and narrative has been ruining the show for the past few years (you're right about the magic wand thing, that's been getting ridiculous).

I say let's give her a shot, she might be the best thing that happened to Doctor Who since David Tennant.

The Doctor's entire personality, shticks and arsenal always change whenever he changes his body, him becoming a female is a pretty big deal.

Yeah, Matt Smith's Doctor somehow reset the cycle and he got 12 more, Capaldi being the new 1st(unless Smith's still counts as the first even though he also the last... idk), but anyway, they're set for another decade or two for new actors.
