No. I guess you could argue that being atheist will make you more likely to seek out answers to things rather than settling for "god did it"....and that could increase your intelligence but a Christian can do that too (and many do) while an atheist can not do that and still live in ignorance...just a different kind.

What nonsense? I said that by being an atheist you may seek answers that many religious people don't care to know because "god did it"...but that that still isn't directly tied to being an atheist as many Christians (for example) can and do do that as well...

Or to word it better: atheism might lead to a more skeptical outlook.

And no, it isn't always the case. Ask one of my close atheist friends - some of his ideas are out there. But then again he does a lot of psychedelic drugs so iunno.

Because he lives in the euro centric west with a christian heritage and railing on any other religious group quantifies as a distasteful hate crime against a minority demographic.

Actually atheism makes you not seek knowledge because you are inherently nihilistic while a religious person has a desire to discover gods mysteries

I was just pointing out the fact that someone using Christians as an example likely lives in a society with a Christian heritage. Just as if someone living in India would likely use Hindus as an example.

Nah. The answer is 100% no because of the way the question is framed.

Choosing to be an atheist doesn't make you more intelligent.

One might argue that being intelligent makes you more likely to be an atheist.

But deciding to not believe in a god/gods doesn't somehow make you smarter.

But of course this is what some idiots seem to think, and so they go around telling people that they're atheists with the intention of garnering more respect from their peers.

An intelligent atheist or religious person will be able to tell you exactly why they believe what they believe, and it's likely you won't be able to make any kind of argument that proves their belief unquestionably wrong.

Atheists can be some of the most sanctimonious, self-absorbed morons out there. The sheer fact of not believing in a god doesn't make them more intelligent, and if they think it does, then they're just another idiot trying to get a free pass for being "awoken" or w/e.

I feel like being critical of religion is healthy, but wholly embracing it and throwing it out the window in a fit are separate sides of the spectrum that leads to intellectual stunting. Even if you don't believe in it, it's still entirely worthwhile to learn about the scripture and the mythology of it all, and understand what another person might see in it - the same way someone might read a book about the Greek gods, and not become a polytheist who sacrifices a goat every now and again to appease Zeus.

Of course, not all atheists throw knowledge about religion out the window - you can be satisfied with the idea of there being no god, and still finding interest in the mythology, history and actions of certain religions. An interest in the subject matter doesn't signify belief. It's the atheist who disregards this to spit in the face of something "lesser" who's not all that, who thinks they're the best for not believing in a god but mostly uses the ideology as an excuse to run their mouth. I think there can be Christians who are receptive and open to knowledge in the same way, who despite believing in a cosmic unknown, can open their mind enough to be more intelligent than the dregs of atheism.
