Episode 5 so far. Haven't seen anything else in this series so I don't even know if I'm starting in the right spot. Entertaining so far though.

Are the servants supposed to represent someone in history?

Yes. Their "Noble Phantasm"(aka their ultimate attack) is basically a reflection of who they are, and is basically telling their opponent "this is who I am" attack.

The series is so confusing in terms of the order in which to watch it. I chose this cuz it was on Netflix. Don't know if the others are.

Fate stay night is the Fate route of the original visual novel. The Saber route. Unlimited Blade works is the Rin route. Heavens Feel (not out yet) is the Sakura route. Each is a different direction of the story. Unfortunately the anime for the Fate route is trash. Fate Zero is a prequel series of the previous Grail war.

To be fair, there is some information from the first Fate/Stay Night that you might miss out on by skipping to UBW. It's just the first one is really considered to be a awful adaptation of the visual novel that most people will tell you to just play the visual novel for the first route than watch the anime.

Each servant is based on someone who was a hero in their life. Knowing who the servant is means someone can figure out their weakness and have an advantage. The Phantasm is really just their super move that is based on who they are. So knowing a phantasm means you can figure out who the servant is and thus know how to defeat said servant.

Because if you know their identity, then you can formulate a strategy based off their abilities known in life. For example, take a non-canon, theoretical Achilles: When he would be first summoned, nobody would think "hey here's a random servant, let's attack his ankles for no real reason", and they probably wouldn't get anywhere. Now, if he used his Noble Phantasm, that would basically indicate "I'm achilles btw", and scream his weaknesses and abilities for the world to see - Noble Phantasms are a double edged sword, in that regard.

Zero is the prequel to the first route right?

If that's the case there is the issue that you might spoil the 3rd route which is an upcoming movie.

Fate/Stay Night is based on the canon ending of the game
Fate/Unlimited Blade Works (or just UBW for short) is the alternate ending
The game has a third route which will get an anime released in October (I think a series of movies) called Heaven's Feel.

Fate/Kaelid Liner Prisma Illya (or sometimes just Prisma Illya) is a shoujo spinoff

Fate/Extra -> Fate/Extella is a video game spinoff series. Fate/Extella is a soft retcon of Fate/Extra and Fate/Extra CCC (never localized) so you can start with just Fate/Extella

Fate/Grand Order is what Fire Emblem Heroes failed to be, a mobile waifu simulator

I am not sure where Fate/Zero fits into this. I think there are some more spinoffs as well.

To be fair, I don't think there's really any agreed upon time of when to watch F/Zero. Some people recommend it early some people recommend it late.

If you want to watch it before UBW or Heaven's Feel that's up to you, but people should at least be aware of the fact Fate/Zero does spoil some of Heaven's Feel.

Well, until Heaven's Feel is actually out, I can't really comment on that. But yeah, I guess you could honestly watch Zero or UBW in either order and it wouldn't really matter, since they both spoil the hell out of each other.

I just personally say Zero should come first because it was the first to come out.
Thought, going from UBW to Zero might be interesting as it's so...different.

AFAIK the way people generally suggest to watch Fate/Stay Night is to:

Play the first route of Fate/Stay Night instead of the Anime. Unless you really don't want to play the visual novel and really want the world building from the first one. Although it should be noted that F/S N isn't really the Fate route. It's a combination of all 3 routes so it does spoiler UBW a bit. You should never watch this after watching either F/Z or F/S UBW, and you really should just skip it.

F/S N, F/S UBW, F/S Heaven's Feel also spoil F/Z and F/Z largely spoils F/S Heaven's Feel.

F/Z does a good job at world building better than UBW and is a better introduction to the series if you don't want to play the visual novel.

But you really shouldn't watch F/Z after watching UBW since you'll just spoil Heaven's Feel while already having spoiled F/Z. But since the movie isn't out, you can do so if you don't want to wait.

Basically either watch F/Z first or watch it last.

Basically:

Watch Fate/Zero first and then Fate/Stay Night - Unlimited Blade Works next
Or vice versa
And then watch the Fate Stay/Night - Heavens Feel movie when it is released

Ignore the original Fate/Stay Night series
Ignore the Unlimited Blade Works movie
Watch Prisma Ilya whatever its called if you want, seems unrelated to the main series

I'm on the second season of Unlimited Blade Works. On the episode where Beserker and Ilya bite the bullet. Fuck Shinji and whom I assume is Gilgamesh. They did a good job making me feel for Ilya in one ep while I hated her whenever I saw her in the first season.
