Punisher: Born is the best origin story although it isn't in mainstream continuity per se. That and In the Beginning are perfect companion pieces, followed by The Cell one-shot.
Greg Rucka's Punisher is the one that made me truly fall in love with the character, it honestly doesn't require much knowledge and Frank himself is mostly portrayed as a quiet, looming figure that feels really different from the usual fare. Ennis' Welcome Back, Frank is an absolute classic, and perfect if you're just looking for some fun and comedy and violence. For some more original-based Punisher stories, Circle of Blood (1986) and the first couple issues of his first ongoing, War Journal, and War Zone are fun reads. My top recommendations are definitely Rucka and Ennis' Max series. If you're really liking the character, Edmondson's run is pretty decent. --- Nosferatu. Punisher MAX is also great, but it's not in the main continuity.
