I just read a facebook post shedding more light on that guy who got 10 million bucks and an apology out of the Canadian government. He was apparently detained for ten years without a trial, only offered a trial if he took a plea deal, and the reason he got $10m is because he successfully sued the Canadian government.

The Canadian Supreme Court found in favour of Khadr, in that the Canadian government was in breach of Canadian and International law. That money will mostly be covering his legal fees. But here's where you should be more concerned about the money. The Canadian government spent $120m of your money, defending itself for committing what is legally, war crimes. Seriously. Your government, was just successfully sued, for war crimes. Crimes they committed not only against Khadr, but against the entire Canadian public. They assured us that we would all be given a fair trial, but now we know that is not true. They assured us that we will always be presumed innocent until proven guilty. We know that is not true. They took your money, money which could have been spent on building half a hospital or something, and spent it instead, on committing war crimes, and crimes directly against the Charter on which our country was founded.

So yeah, "urr they apologized to a terrorist! stupid fucking liberal pussies taking over the world!" sounds like a load of horse shit. The "terrorist" sued Canada, their Supreme Court ruled in favor of him - basically confirming that a decade of torture and other garbage in Gitmo was unlawful as fuck, and that he had every right to compensation.

The "terrorist" sued the government for unlawful actions, and the "terrorist" won. The Supreme court ruled in favor of him. That means that the US and Canada must have done some incredibly illegal shit, otherwise the fucking Supreme Court wouldn't have ruled in favor of the guy. Think about that next time you smear this guy as a terrorist - the reason he got ten mil and an apology is because the US and Canada were in the wrong.

For all I know, the dude is a Canadian citizen and they did jack shit to help him out. Maybe Canada is behind the whole trial plea bargain thing. They wouldn't have lost this lawsuit if they weren't guilty of something.

The court ruled that Canada's government failed to uphold even the basic minimum in protecting his rights. Khadr's family was not sympathetic so helping any one of them would have been political suicide and why consecutive administrations just kept kicking the can down the road. It ended up with Trudeau who had the unenviable position of either pushing for a years-long legal battle he'd lose and be blamed for wasting taxpayer money, or just taking a settlement and saving money in the long run and being painted as a terrorist sympathizer.

There's also this massive post that basically summarises why I may not like the Khadrs but I agree that Omar Khadr was entitled to compensation for his treatment.
