Do you think they really have a concept of clothing? Or do they just assume it's like our fur and we have really strange camouflage abilities, or that we're all shape changers that shed our skin constantly?

And what about pockets..."why does that human keep swallowing and regurgitating that rectangle of glass and plastic constantly? And just how many mouths does it have??"

Of course. Some smaller pets even like wearing clothes because it keeps them warmer.


My dog would signal for me to put on my shoes and, in winter, a sweater when she wanted a walk.

Putting clothes on a dog should result in prison time

That doesn't mean they necessarily understand the concept of it. Association is not the same as understanding. You can train mice to push buttons for food. That doesn't prove they know what how a button works. They just now "if I bump into this red thing I get food." Your dog associated your shoes with going for a walk because you never went outside without them on. So if he wanted to go outside, he had to get you to put them on, and that would then cause you to open the magical portal in the wall that opens on command.

Of course a dog isn't going to know or care where a shoe comes from or what the mechanics of it are. But your initial question was whether they understood that it wasn't a part of the hum an and the answer to that is yes.
