Pokemon is a good example. Thundershock, bolt, and thunder should be lightning shock, bolt, and lightning.

Breath of the Wild does the same. >_> It should be the Great Lightning or Great Electric Blade, not the Great Thunder Blade.

"Lightning" sounds sleek and speedy. "Thunder" sounds powerful and forceful.

how about the basic Light spell in Fire Emblem being called "Lightning" while the lightning Anima spell is called "Thunder"?

TC must really fucking hate Fire Emblem then. It has "Thunder" tomes which do what you expect, and then "Lightning" tomes which are actually light magic.

Some games legitimately use thunder attacks though. DnD has "Thunder" themed attacks that deal Sonic-type damage.

for japanese games at least the kanji used for lightning and thunder are synonymous so translators can use either and both are technically correct

But that applies to fire and ice also.

It's not sonic damage; it's concussive damage. Rather than sound, D&D thunder damage is caused by the force of the pressure wave through the air.

...Which one could argue that that's all sound actually is, but whatevs. To me, there's a difference.
