People say the same thing about Saskatchewan in Canada. It's actually awful for a ton of reasons;
- Super clique-y. If you don't have roots dating back to pioneer days, you are an outsider.
- Massive drug problems.
- Alcoholism and drunk driving are not seen as problems.
- Horribly backwards laws and social programs.
- Because the growing season is so short, everything but beef and grain is horribly expensive.
- No culture, no festivals, no foreign cuisine. Basically, you better like hamburgers and getting drunk.
- Weird superiority complex that is outwardly hostile to anyone not from their part of the world.
- If you don't go to school of agriculture, you are just going to school to bum around for a few years. Real men either become mechanics, go to the rigs, or farm. Women shouldn't have careers. Even if you don't go into agriculture, it's the only degree to have.
- Every major band skips the province.
I imagine a lot of those things are the same in the flyover states.
