It's really fun, but either I just need to get good or you just accept that the items can completely screw you over.

Another time I got the bullet item and came up from 12th place and got like 4th ultimately. Not even a close 12th place, I was like very far behind.

Use the horn to protect you from the blue shell.

I haven't played a Mario Kart since 64 so need to catch up.

Don't know about the mushroom boost thing, haven't tried it yet.

But the horn's main purpose is blue shell protection.

Don't think so. pretty sure the horn is the only thing that ca stop a blue shell (incidentally, it can stop ANYTHING with the right timing).

You can stump it by gettin gud. Even a blue shell can be dodged with skill. Pissed my friends off so much in Double Dash.

Maybe it's the portability? There were probably some fixes too. I never played the Wii U version so it's all new to me.

Wii U to me was basically a Splatoon machine (main reason I got the Switch was for 2)

That's how it's been since Mario kart Wii lol. And the mushroom trick has been around since then. A fraction of a second before the blue shell lands, hit the mushroom to boost away from the impact.

Yeah, it's basically Double Dash on steroids as far as AI cheapness goes. My favorite thus far was this: Boo stole my protection item (can't remember if it was a horn or just a banana / shell to hang off the back), red shell, blue shell, red shell, all in perfect sequence to keep me at a standstill for at least ten seconds or more. I don't think the level of AI conspiracy against the player is any stronger in this game over DD; MK8 just has some additional items with which to fuck you over.

The one step up over DD in this regard is that the second-toughest AI racer isn't a blatant lackey for your circuit nemesis - in situations where you're in 3rd place, this driver will actually occasionally fire red shells forward at the nemesis instead of just back at you. Plus a lot more AI racers are out for blood in 8 - makes it harder to catch up if you fall behind, but it does allow more upsets to the nemesis and can balance out the final score. Doesn't mean much if you're going for a perfect score in the circuit as opposed to simply getting 1st overall, but still...

Back when it first came out for Wii u, I had just gotten a capture device and uploaded all the funny moments to YouTube. One of my favorites is my cousin playing as waluigi and doing a stunt just a blue she'll impacts him. Looks like he's taunting it.

If I can dodge blue shells with the Bowser kart, you can definitely do it with anything else. Getting used to the AI racers can teach you basics. Verses other players it gets rough because they immediately do the cheap shit and some will hunt you out of revenge rofl. Anybody can get good at the game though.

This is a huge plus. Also for me I always had the hardest time getting the online to work on Wii U. I played it for the first time today on Switch and it was flawless once I got it connected.

AFAIK that was for Blue Shells (the ones that had wings). When they started moving down toward they lost their forward movement IIRC, letting you zoom away at the last second

The Switch is far more popular than the Wii U was, so a lot of people who didn't play it on Wii U are playing it for the first time on Switch.

is there cross-play between the Wii U and switch version? Or are they two completely different games?

I still have the Wii U version but if everybody moved over to the switch version then that wouldn't be much fun.

Double Dash made enough formula changes to count as fairly unique. And the antigrav in MK8 is actually pretty sweet. Other than that, I don't see much point in trying to defend it as anything other than more of the same, especially when the formula's consistently fun.

MK8 is on some bullshit over how your ability to prevent a comeback is partially based on luck

Blast radius is small, so it's hard to accurately hit karts in front of you when you throw it

Karts behind you are often right on your ass, so you'll get caught in the explosion as well

I don't find it that bad in this one. If you get a good lead in the race it doesn't matter when you get hit by the odd blue shell. Same thing with online races. I find it a lot harder when you're stuck in that 3-8 spots. You just get pelted with weapons there.

This was in 150cc though. Can't comment on 200cc.

And this is why MKDS is the best Mario Kart. Say what you will about Snaking but having a manual way of dodging Blue Shells via mini-turbo beats needing an item to avoid it by far.

The difference is the element of randomness and punishment was not as strong in previous Mario Kart games and that's what made them better while still maintaining the fun of the 'randomness'. Saying "that's just how Mario Kart is" is not a good argument.

Is it really that much worse? I thought Wii was worse than MK8. MK64 might be a little better but your success still relied a lot on the weapons you picked up. I never played much Double Dash or the handheld ones though.

Items screwing you over seems like a total staple in MK to me.

Yeah, Blooper is easily the shittiest item. I wish they'd wise up and stop bringing that turd back.

Though nothing beats the feeling of getting saddled with triple mushrooms just as you hit the windiest no-rails sections of Rainbow Road (in both Double Dash and MK8), which happens to me so often that it should be turned into a sitcom.

This game is pretty fun but I feel like I get a communication error or connection lost like 50% of the time.

I just did a race where I was in 1st for like a whole lap, thinking I was doing good and that it was a miracle that I hadn't been hit by any items, but then I started lapping other players and realized nobody else was moving.
