The clothes and over the top colors were terrible, and everyone was doing cocain. But the music wasn't half bad (although much worse than the 70's and 90's) and the movies were weird as fuck.

It was pretty awesome.
If you want some idea the following movies pretty much nail the vibe: Breakfast Club (yes - saturday detention was a thing) Fast times at Ridgemont High (pretty much a high school documentary) War Games (surprisingly accurate depiction of computers - minus the WOPR) Sixteen Candles (pretty accurate representation of 80s parties) ...
