lots of people use it to get games for free because they're cheap and lazy
they even come up with all sorts of convoluted excuses

Should be okay for older games that aren't available on any modern platform (Virtual Console, XBLA, etc.).

Also should be okay for fan translations of games that the companies never bothered to localize, like Mother 3 and Ace Attorney Investigations 2.

It's ok to emulate older Nintendo games because of their current policies and actions. Look at the NES Classic and that whole shit storm. We'll see the same shit with the SNES Classic.

Generally I'm against pirating but I see no problem pirating Nintendo games.

Same way I feel about most pirating, really: I think it's fine if there's no reasonable way to get my hands on the real thing, and/or if I've bought the real thing in the past.

So, I think it's reasonable to emulate an old N64 game I used to have, because that's basically impossible to get my hands on and even if I did it wouldn't benefit the IP holder anyway. I don't think it's reasonable to emulate a current release for reasons like "I can't afford it" or "I wouldn't have bought it anyway".

If there are reasonably affordable ways to still financially reward the creators, you should.

However emulation is, long term, the only way to preserve gaming history and culture. There is only a small amount of early arcade games believed to be "lost", whereas more than one third of silent era Hollywood movies are lost forever.

This is pretty reasonable. I've heard this a lot.

I'm surprised there aren't more people in here weighing in. When the SNES classic was announced it seemed there was a lot of people in the topic basically saying they would just make one with a raspberry pi and have more games.

Producers don't give a fuck about consumers and are continually trying to rip them off so I see no problem with with consumers fighting back and ripping producers off. There is no ethics in a capitalist economic system. Saving and gaining money are the measures of capitalistic ethics therefore emulation and piracy are good capitalism

After 7 years of passed I'm pretty fine with almost all forms of piracy tbh. Before then, typically against.

Don't matter what everyone else thinks, but Nintendo's policies regarding emulation are absolutely ridiculous.

Do you mean 7 years after a game has been released?
