C. They need to be designed from the ground up with 60fps in mind.

I don't really care how high the framerate is as long as it's steady.

If raising it to 60 causes studders, leave it at 30.

60fps is too smooth. When you move your head quickly, there's a blur in your vision. 60fps doesn't have that, hence it being uncanny and nauseating for most people.

No.

Once 30 fps became the standard it reset the bar for average graphics. The general audience wouldn't welcome a leap backwards in visual quality for a smoothness in framerate that many find inconsequential.

I think games need to stop giving a shit about how they look and start worrying how they play. There is almost zero games in the last 3 years I have gave a shit about, and all of those were games like The Binding of Isaac and Hollow Knight.

I want to play a game, not watch a movie

This. See: fighting games, shmups, and fps.

NERDLORE ALERT

In Team Fortress Classic the HWGuy's minigun had the fastest ttk at 23 fps. Many high level players would nake a script for their mouse 1 that would cap their fps at 23 when firing the minigun.

Movies aren't 60 FPS for a reason.

60 FPS isn't just about visuals, it affects the responsiveness of the inputs and stuff. There's a reason professionals FPS players will crank the settings down to low and overclock their monitors over 144hz to get as many fps as possible even though at that point you're getting into territory where the human eye legitimately can't even tell the difference. They do it because it gives you an ever so slight increase in responsiveness and such. For a lot of those people even going down to 60fps feels a bit sluggish, again not visually but just in terms of inputs.
And in games like FPS's or anything fast paced, the responsiveness matters. Framerate isn't all visual.

Look at stuff like CoD, MW1 was at one point considered as a top tier game on a graphical and technical level. A lot of people bought a PS3/360 just for that game. And even still, say what you will about CoD but when look at Advanced Warfare from the beginning of this gen it's still a great looking game even by 2017 standards. Then look at stuff like MGS V which was native 1080p/60fps on both current gen consoles and it looks great. The there's stuff like Doom 2016, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Battlefield 4/Hardline/1, and Battlefront.
Shit Battlefield 1 is one of the best looking games on current gen consoles period and even then it's only running at roughly the medium equivalent PC settings.
If an engine and game is designed and optimized properly, 1080p and average 60 FPS is obtainable with graphics that still feel completely modern.

Uhh I'm not even sure what you're saying or asking here. Yeah a lot of Nintendo stuff is 60FPS but I'm not talking about platforms here, I'm taking about the 3rd party developers and the engines they use.

FPS does have to do with how they play, it's not purely a visual thing. There's a reason even the NES and shit ran all games at 60fps. it matters in pixel platformers like Mario.

There's a reason, but do you know what it is? Back in the early 20th century, film was expensive. So they experimented a bit to figure out the absolute minimum amount of film they could use while preserving the illusion of motion. They settled on 24Hz. So why does this reason, a direct result of the price of film in the early 1900s, affect game design?

144hz master race

I mean 144hz is great and all but only like 1% of games actually own a display that goes over 60hz, they don't even make TV's that are truly over 60hz in the same way monitors are and most people don't want to buy a monitor just to be able to play their games...
But everyone with a TV or monitor has the ability to display 60fps and what I'm saying is that 60fps should be the baseline for what's acceptable, not 30 like it is now. Obviously they should be able to scale higher into the 100's for the enthusiasts but I think the target for game engines should be 60fps and that's what they should be designed around and optimized for.

Yes. FPS is much more important than resolution, and console makers should stop increasing resolution until they can maintain steady frame rates. 1080p at 60 FPS is a superior gaming experience to 4K at 30 FPS.

Hollow Knight is absolutely beautiful, it's really not an example of not giving a shit about how a game looks. Also framerate does affect how the game plays. Targeting a higher framerate means sacrificing some visuals for the sake of smooth gameplay. It's the opposite of graphics whoring.

I mean I never mentioned anything about a specific platform, ie the Switch. I'm meaning all platforms as an umbrella, that game engines and developers, specifically third party since they account for the majority of games, need to set a uniformity standard of designing AAA games with 60fps as a baseline.
I'm not singling out any one platform or any one developer, I'm saying the industry as a whole needs to push for 60fps baseline performance as the standard for AAA games.

I'm not saying for every game either btw. Just that bug budget AAA games need to set it as the baseline for most games. Some games can feel free to modify the engine or do things differently to go for less but that the "standard" should be 60fps for most AAA games like FPS's, Action games, fighting games, racing games, etc. Similar to how it was back in the NES/SNES days where 60fps was the standard for games.
