The ones I fell for were unfreezing Zora's Domain and Super Mario World having an alternate boss fight against Bowser. There is a back door to his castle, but it just skips to the last stretch of the level. It doesn't change the boss fight.

And you got there by accessing the Light Temple which you can only get to by doing crooked cartridge in front of the gossip stones next to the Temple of Time.

I was convinced for years that there was a trail of breadcrumbs left in FF7 that would lead to Aeris' revival. I got the notion when I first saw her ghost in the Sector 5 Church. After that, any time I saw a new cutscene, or won a weird useless item at the Gold Saucer, or found an item I'd never known about before (like the Cursed Ring), I kept thinking 'this is it! This is the next step that will somehow lead me toward it finallly happening!!'

I think Castlevania SotN spoiled me severely in terms of weird breadcrumb-trail secrets actually having a monumental payoff.

The crazy thing is there were actually working in game glitches to get access to the chris houlihan room in LttP and to catch mew in og pokemon red and blue. If i only knew how to do it back in the day, man, i could have made a fortune selling kids mews.

You're not completely wrong about those bread crumbs. There's even a trail in the Ancient City (or whatever location leads to the Ancient City) that leads to a room that has nothing in it. One of the "ghosts" is intentional (the one where she's watering flowers), and there's another one which is a glitch. You can even access the glitched version the very first time you leave the church. If you return to that screen, the glitch will occur.
