I live in a big house and it's handy to have a pair of running shoes so that it doesn't take me forever to get from one area of the house to another.

But the cops need bigger guns to be safe, right guys?

Seriously, it's shit like this that goes to show that treating people with compassion and consideration are the key to these situations.

so you're honestly suggesting that cops stop carrying weapons and start using compassion against armed criminals

No? Where did I suggest that?

I was pointing out that deescalation techniques like this are a helluva lot safer and more effective than militarization of police forces.

safer for whom though? I agree I'd rather have cops not shoot anybody if need be, but in a lot of cases they need to have guns.

I'm not sure about that. SLC hasn't had any deaths on either side since 2015, so there might be something to it.

Not only that, but I'm fairly certain there are countries out there where the cops are not armed/lightly armed, and they don't have constant police deaths.

And even then, I'm not saying they shouldn't be armed at all, but the militarization of police force is taking things way to far in the opposite direction.

Well, London actually has a huge criminal sector. It was actually one of the original gang capitals of the world. IIRC, their police aren't very heavily armed (if at all).

I think there is a balance to be struck. Obviously, there are dangerous groups and individuals out there who will not be reasoned with and will use violence as leverage against their victims and the police. However, there are also a decent number of people who are desperate or mentally disturbed and simply need some help to reintegrate into society. I respect that police lay their lives on the line, and that many criminals have made some poor choices, but that doesn't entitle the police to shoot first and ask questions later, you know?

I thought basic beat cops weren't armed, though. My mistake. How about Japan?

Of course, but how many people will be needless killed in a violent confrontation who simply needed to be talked down? It goes both ways.

I believe most people who can get talked down out of a confrontation are other than the obvious famous police brutality incidents. That might just be my optimistic side though.
