I don't know why people are expecting something completely and totally different in an established IP that has established, and very well-received gameplay. When 64 used punches, Sunshine used FLUDD, Galaxy used Luma spinning, and now Mario uses caps. Really though, I don't think there's much that spares the 2D Marios. When fan hacks of SMW are better than some of the 2D Marios by Nintendo, it is a problem. But to accuse of 3D Marios of rehashing is... just plain ignorance, really. All the Zeldas play differently, too, especially now with BotW. But one game doesn't excuse 4 titles in a row copy and pasting the formula while fans eat it up. If you don't see rehashing as a bad thing for any series you're a hopeless fanboy. Assassins Creed, Call of Duty, whatever the game is.
