About a month ago, I went to New Jersey to meet my girlfriend's parents for the first time. They were telling me all about the high property taxes and whatnot. They're wanting to move out of Jersey so bad, but unfortunately can't because of how much money they'd have to pay due to taxes.

And for anybody in this thread that's from Jersey, I'm sorry, but your state fucking SUCKS. Between the high ass taxes, the annoying ass toll booths everywhere, and the god awful traffic and drivers, I don't know how the hell you put up with it. I was only there for about a week, and all I got to say is fuck New Jersey.

Sick of IL. Just asking for money out every pocket I have to find programs I will never or use. While roads take over 10 years to get fixed.

The more money i earn the more I dislike poor people(certain)(not at all)

Work my ass off to get 400 dollars taken out of my check a week to go to some motherfuckers

move to tennessee

they have no sales or income tax (well, except on capital gains and dividends)

you will still pay property taxes but it will be very modest

try to remember that these programs are designed to provide a safety net so that when you inevitably fuck up your life in some idiotic way that is 100% your own fault, you don't go into a freefall that leads to a drug-fueled suicide, but instead can bounce back and make your way back to your present position

functionally it's designed to ensure class mobility and make sure that people don't live one stupid decision from their doom

it does mean that people who are doing well can only afford one brand new sports car instead of two

but i think you and i can live with that

I don't hate the area. I know the Northern areas of NJ are much scarier places to live. It's just such an expensive state to live in. The traffic/construction is nonstop. Me and my girl do well for ourselves and live quite comfortably but we can't help but imagine how much better our lives would be down south.

i used to live near turtleback zoo.
that is like NYC traffic in an area that can't support it at all

Depends on your long term plans. Schooling in Florida is abysmal, so if you're hoping to have kids and you want them to actually succeed, sticking to NJ which has the #1 or #2 highest rated public school system in the country (year after year) would be good. Property also appreciates much more in NJ if you move into any number of areas still expanding, so it can be a smart (albeit expensive) investment as well, whereas Florida is kind of stagnant right now for property.

If you're just looking to move somewhere warm and cheap so you can set money aside, Florida is probably fine, but if you're looking to settle down and grow roots, there are plenty of reasons to stay.

schooling is really dependent on your district. when i was going for my teaching certification, i remember there being like 600 school districts. seems like every town in essex had their own fucking district.
property does seem to inflate like crazy. I know my home is valued like 70k more then what i paid for it 3 years ago.

If that ever happened I would just move with my parents who have money or my girlfriends parents who are wealthy until I could bounce back. Or I would just just re enlist in the army with a signing bonus

if they elected a democratic governor they probably would solve a lot of these problem, assuming said governor wasnt corrupt as crap

you could say the same about electing more GOP members of the state legislature too to be fair

I don't even think that type of safety net is a particularly big expenditure. I'm no expert, but at least here in Oregon, the budget problems have a lot to do with huge pension guarantees that were made to public employees for decades that ended up being really unsustainable. There have been cuts to public education to pay for the pensions of retired public employees. I wouldn't be surprised if a similar situation is true in IL.

Your property taxes in the states are insane, compared to here in Canada, but from my understanding can't you deduct your property taxes from your income tax? Or was I lied to about that?

he just wouldn't win an election to be governor

Our current governor is a Republican. I like Rauner because he has acknowledged and owned the mess Illinois is in financially and has begun to take an enema to this state.

However, the Madigans run Springfield the way Carmine Falcone runs Gotham. They aren't going away without a battle.

You can

The full amount or a %age?

Like if it's the full amount then what's the problem? The typical person pays way more in income tax than property taxes? Wouldn't that mean that more of your taxes are staying within the local area?

I'm assuming that property taxes fund schools, police, municipal services, right? I'm also assuming the higher property taxes are the areas with the "good" schools?
