For what it's worth, the lobbyists in the company i work for that I've talked to are flipping shit and are beyond pissed (i work for one of the largest blue cross blue shield companies).

Yeah the new plan allows us to raise prices, but we'd be forced to do that just to not go bankrupt because the republicans don't understand any carrots or sticks to influence behavior besides PRICES LALALA. And then we'd be even more hated by the communities we serve, and long term it wouldn't be healthy in the slightest.

So is it an issue with the AHCA in particular, or more of an issue where Obamacare changed the field enough that any sort of repeal will lead to massive community backlash/long term problems? If you don't mind me asking.

Just give free coverage to those 22 million. Paid for with big new taxes on lattes, avocados, kale, brown rice, sushi, non-profit organizations other than religious ones, health insurance companies, public transit, and schools.

Actually, it would require a lot of finesse to structure that as an income tax to make it constitutional, since the constitution bans non-income based direct federal taxes that aren't apportioned among the states based on the census. And of course we want to target blue states with these taxes so there wouldn't be a point to apportion it among the states per the constitution.

There's actually a really fucking easy way to cover those 22 million: don't pass a repeal bill at all

A bit of both. The aca needs some fixing, but if the republicans were serious about fixing those issues then they could start by paying the risk corridors that we're legally owed.

With regards to the a/bhca, the stipulations of essentially allowing someone you go without insurance until they need it is asinine and goes against every theory that underpins insurance as a viable product. It indicates a fundamental misunderstanding of what they're even trying to regulate.

Next up, it would be different if this only impacted the individual market, since that's honestly small pickings when it comes to market size. Small group (businesses under 50 employees) and large group (businesses with 51 or more employees) are where the bulk of health insurance business is. Senior is also a big deal, but less than small or large group. However, these proposals don't limit their scope to individual. To be fair, neither did the aca, but large group and senior were minor regulations that have really only been coming into play I recent years.

Which leads me to another thing - the sunset period proposed here is short. They're trying to jam these things through, with a lot of things hitting markets in the next year or two. That gives us basically no time to prepare for anything, since we've already sold policies for 2018 q2.

If they don't repeal Obamacare they will be voted out of office in 2018. A big purpose of electing Republicans is that they will fight for what their constituents want. If they will give up now after winning the 2016 as emphatically as it is possible to win (total control of all branches of government) they will give up that for a longish time.

The issue is that a lot of people liked ACA, while many hated Obamacare meaning a full repeal will likely give them as much backlash among their constituents that voted for them as not touching it. Basically they've placed themselves into a corner and must decide which group to piss off.

It's much easier to be the opposition than it is to govern.

I think the problem is that the Republicans don't want to meet in the middle, they want the Democrats to agree with them 100%.

That's the only "bipartisan" they will accept. Making any sort of compromise with Democrats is the Devil (literally) and anyone who does so is evil.

I think they could probably get to 60, albeit maybe with only 15ish Republicans

Unfortunately I don't think Mitch is one of them (and certainly not Ryan in the House)

What's the approval rating among Republican voters? That's what GOP lawmakers are really going to be concerned about. It doesn't hurt your re-election chances if people who weren't going to vote for you anyway disapprove of a bill you voted for.

The polling on ACA is interesting.

Like 35% of people are sold or unsold on it as a matter if principle but theres a pretty big group that is like "we like the protections and subsidies but not the mandates" which is the tricky group to fully please and is why when obama was in office this thing polled in the low 40s and now polls in the high 50s/low 60s.

That's not really true; passing this garbage bill will likely drive up Dem turnout in 2018 and 2020.

Though I'm sure a lot of Senators in redder states fear a primary challenge more than a general election challenger.
