Just play the original SNES one if you want to play that one.

The FF6 port really isn't that bad if you haven't played the original, the graphics themselves really aren't that bad, it's just by comparison, the people who played it growing up. The game itself is still fantastic.

I think 7 is a great place to start. The graphics are obviously dated but if you consider it more an art-style, they actually have a charming aesthetic.

The game is also simple enough to easily wrap your head around, with the materia system being immediately intuitive. To anecdotally prove this point, the last time I went through the game, a friend did too and I used a guide to find all the super strong and secret materia as well as materia combos -- where my friend who barely even plays RPGs kinda fumbled his way through with whatever is freely given or bought in stores and made it to the last dungeon (had real trouble there though because of Death IIRC).

It's a good time, iconic music, characters, story (uh, as wonky as it is at times) and the combat system is such that if you choose to try any of the other games, you'll be familar with how they work outside of the most recent ones that keep attempting random stuff.

Why do people hate FFIV: After Life so much? I was thinking of getting it since I have a lot of the other FF games on Steam.

After Years? I liked it, but I could definitely see why people wouldn't. It's really grindy if you want all the best equipment, especially if you aren't abusing the RNG which I have no idea if you can do in the Steam version.

I really loved the characters though, and they introduced a lot more than was in the original game, including some that were formerly NPCs. The new additions to the battle system are fine too, especially the combo attacks.

Strictly speaking, it should be better unless the gsme is also shorter in duration since you'll be going through new screens constantly instead of backtracking from treasure chests for 50% of the game's playtime.

It's utterly boring. All you do is walk and fight, repeatedly. At least in other titles there's a semblance of a story by then, and there's new scenery to keep things fresh. Not in this game, though; you're literally walking down a hallway for far too long.

Every FF port on Steam is objectively the best one released, save for 4-5-6. If you've never played one, start with 4 - it's relatively simple to pick up.

FF XIII is actually great. Probably in my top 5 numbered games and I love the series. People are just very vocal about hating it.

DO NOT BUY AFTER YEARS STEAM VERSION

Play the PSP version. The Steam version is totally neutered in content. It's missing half the fucking game.

7, 8, 9, and 10 are all great ports. the X/X-2 HD port also has all the content from the international version of FFX that many of us missed back in 2002.

The earlier ports are good, but can turn some people off if they're not down with how the games look on mobile, because these are basically straight ports of those.

i haven't played the original and i still think the new art is hideous
