People don't watch batman stuff because he's white. They watch it because they enjoy the character. However, if he was changed into a black person in a movie, people would be pissed because
1. You're changing a character that people have grown up with for generations
2. A lot of people would feel as if he was changed just for pandering and "diversity points" and not because changing his race makes the story more interesting
3. Batman comes from generations of rich ancestors and in the U.S., black people were slaves up until almost the end of the 19th century so it's hard to suspend disbelief that his ancestors were wealthy in this country

People would be mad about the change, but that wouldn't necessarily make them racist. They'd only be racist if they were mad because they just don't like black people. So your logic was flawed and it was a bad defense.

1. Well the point is the triviality of his whiteness. To say you changed the character they grew up with generations is putting great importance on his skin color if that is the only thing you changed.

2. That could be so. They could be discontented with a string of changed characters.

3. This one isn't hard to get around. It need only be that Martha is black and therefore her son is. So the Wayne family history wouldn't be altered. You just have Thomas falling in love with an African American woman. Perhaps some could argue this is changing too much of the character but I feel that argument is still very fragile.
Perhaps we can take someone else of the level of Batman not defined by inheriting wealth to find out if that is the case. Black Spiderman comes to mind.
