You live with 64 out of 100 points of privilege.

You're quite privileged. You've had a few struggles, but overall your life has been far easier than most. This is not a bad thing, nor is it something to be ashamed of. But you should be aware of your advantages and work to help others who don't have them. Thank you for checking your privilege.

You live with 43 out of 100 points of privilege.

You're not privileged at all. You grew up with an intersectional, complicated identity, and life never let you forget it. You've had your fair share of struggles, and you've worked hard to overcome them. We do not live in an ideal world and you had to learn that the hard way. It is not your responsibility to educate those with more advantages than you, but if you decide you want to, go ahead and send them this quiz. Hopefully it will help.

I hate this 'privilege' shit. I lived with three white girls at one point in time. Two graduated from Northwestern, one from Yale. Their parents were doctors and lawyers. Went to private schools their entire lives and coasted by on their parents' dime. They loved talking about how privileged the white male is and how I have it so much easier than them. My mom died of ALS when I was in high school and my dad was on unemployment for 5 years dealing with that and was/is still unemployed dealing with that. I worked and paid my way through college. But somehow I was privileged. I kinda hated them.

Wait really? I scored 48, and got a giant red "YOU'RE NOT PRIVILEGED" image from buzzfeed.

This image:

5 points difference really flips that from a giant red YOU'RE NOT PRIVILEGED jpg to quite privileged? That's uhh...quite a swing.

I mean, it sounds like they were the ones who didn't understand privilege, not you. *shrug*

The quiz has questions about poverty, including questions like "did you go to private school?" "are your parents paying for your tuition?" "have you ever had to work a service job?" "Have you ever gone to bed hungry?" "Are both of your parents alive?"

For all that yes, men can sometimes get small advantages just for being male. (Like grad school applications--if you have a male sounding name on an identical resume you get a small edge; you have to actually get to the point where you have a strong resume, though).

I mean it's a buzzfeed quiz, and should be treated about as seriously as the Harry Potter sorting quizzes.

Near as I can tell, it just gives you a point for every question you answer. But that means questions like this

"I have never been raped" y/n
"I have never been violently threatened because of my sexuality." y/n

Are being weighed equivalently to questions like this

"I have never done my taxes myself." y/n
"I went to summer camp." y/n

TBH I can't even remember if I ever went to summer camp or not. I know my high school did some field trips to log cabins, but that was in like November and not summer. What exactly is this question measuring anyway?

Yes, but women can also get small advantages just for being female. Sex-specific programs and scholarships are an easy example of that. Privilege is a legitimate concept but the politicized ideas of it that assume it's only one way, like "male privilege at the cost of female oppression" are just wrong.

I mean, yes, I agree that gender based privilege is not uniform. (You are correct that gender based scholarships are more often female-only, although I have seen male-only scholarships, they are less common).

For another one, police are generally shittier to men. If there's a domestic dispute, even if it's the man being physically abused, and the man who calls the cops, the police have been known to arrest the man. And in terms of African Americans being shot and killed by the police...far more men than women.

Men who have been raped are generally less likely to be taken seriously.

I would argue the list is longer for ways in which society is shitty towards women, but yes, society is definitely shittier towards men in a number of areas.

I don't think it's only black men who are shot and killed much more often than women by the police, I think this is true for people of all colours. and women also have the privilege of priority seating on lifeboats.

Do you think there's any particular relevance to the question of which sex is broadly more privileged? To answer that question you would have to not only try and find whose list was longer, as you say, but you'd have to weight the different privileges too. That would open you up to a lot of subjectivity, but I would argue the two aforementioned ones are some of the biggest privileges of all. There are women who are alive thanks to those privileges when if they were male they'd be dead.

But I don't see how the question could possibly be productive. If you want to make things fairer, the best method is just to find anything unfair and then try to fix it, as far as I can tell.

68 although some of these questions are silly.

Like I've never been in a bad financial situation but I'm not sure it counts as being privileged when that's entirely down to my own decisions. I worked full-time during college to ensure I didn't rack up debt. I stayed with the same company after graduating and worked ridiculously hard in order to move up the ladder. Then I did stupid long hours after moving up the ladder and also kept tenure with the same company (been there since I was 18). I also opted not to have children for financial (and free time) reasons.

So it's not like someone just handed me the money whilst I slacked off. I had to sacrifice the bulk of my 20s for it. Plus it was contributing factor in my marriage failing (not the only thing but those long work hours were definitely what started it)

I mean, in the context of this quiz, sure.

(FWIW it's not that hard to measure--it's hard to figure out how much any one individual privilege matters, but we can see how they combine together by looking at how far the average man/woman gets in society).

Well...sure I can agree with that.

But if that's the approach we're taking, we shouldn't complain about solutions. Scholarships for, say, women in science is a solution to the problem that there has historically been a gender imbalance towards men in science fields. Similar approaches to fix gender imbalances have worked in other fields in the past (Law school used to be very male dominated, is now relatively gender balanced). Same idea with stuff like girls-only computer camps for highschoolers--they exist to try and encourage more enrollment at the university level, which has been a recent problem.

having people ask to touch my hair is great! Just because some extremely uppity people think it's racist doesn't mean it deserves a spot on this list.

When people touch my hair and pat it down and call it fluffy I basically get instant intimacy and a decent ice breaker. So to the white people of the world: please don't stop asking to touch curly hair!

55, expected more but a lot of childhood stuff brought the score down I guess.

Besides, this is the worst quiz you could possibly design for testing privilege. It's 100% non-intersectional (due to being a single-axis number from 0 to 100), which misses the entire point of intersectional privilege. And it gives the same weight to every item, which destroys what little other point there is to the comparison metric.

I guarantee this quiz was made by an extremely privileged person who wanted to feel like they got a "B-" in privilege because they only got 82/100.

I think that's a fine suggestion, but I imagine you would still run into the problem of weighting different privileges, unless I misunderstand what you mean by "How far people get in society".

For instance, while men make more money on average and are over-represented in high-ranking positions like CEOs or political office, women have a longer life expectancy and lower rates of untimely death.

metroid composite posted...

I don't think that quotas make things fairer, but it depends on what your goals are. To me it's not necessarily a problem if one sex is over-represented in a specific field. If there are certain policies or barriers that make it harder for the other sex to enter that field, then that I would agree is unfair. But the sensible solution would be to remove the unfair policy itself, rather than to add another unfair policy as a counterweight.

But even if you disagree, it can't be denied that sex-specific camps or scholarships or quotas are a form of privilege based on sex. That just means that sex-specific privileges aren't inherently a bad thing.
