Like, that has always been the black sheep of the family. The one that is barely played by the majority of the fanbase because it is so different from all the others and so dated. While it may seem like this is just another case of "lol port/remake cash-in", that's far from the case. This is Nintendo taking a dead game from an extinct platform and using it to help relaunch a struggling franchise. This is video game necromancy lol.

Yeah, this IS kinda lazy, but it beats the shit out of everything we've gotten for the franchise in like a decade. The flip side is that this is going to be bringing an ignored chunk of the Metroid storyline back into the mainstream, and that this style of game is EXACTLY what the fanbase has been wanting for over a decade (along with another Prime game).

This E3 was pretty much the best case scenario for the Metroid fanbase, a fanbase that has been constantly growing despite the utter lack of quality games released for it. Its very telling that the main event every year at Awesome Games Done Quick and Summer Games Done Quick is always a Super Metroid race, and they often have multiple Super Metroid runs each year.

Totes. We've already had a remake of the original and I DO NOT want a remake of Super or Fusion. This is a happy medium

It's a shame Nintendo had to sink a nearly finished, multi-year effort Metroid 2 remake fan project though. Talk about poor timing.

*shrug* I agree, but I can understand their position. Samus Returns is set to launch in a few months, so they've been working on this for awhile. It'd be like if someone decided to release a fan remake of Ocarina Of Time just before the 3DS version was announced. Just unfortunate timing.

Metroid 2 is the only mainline game in the series (aside from Other M) that I haven't been able to muster the motivation to play. I'm itching for a remake but I much prefer the graphics of the fan-made project.

Yeah. At the very least, most Metroid fans have probably already played AM2R, so we can get the experience of both games. Besides I'm sure the creator of AM2R has a Patreon or PayPal, so you could donate to him if you feel like he deserves it after all the hard work he's put into it.

The funny thing is that despite Metroid 2 being the black sheep of the family, it's an integral part of the Metroid storyline. It's the precursor to Super Metroid, and deals with Samus eradicating the metroids on SR388. It segues completely into Super Metroid at that point, and sets up for Metroid Fusion, with the SA-X virus. I'm glad that they're finally giving it the remake love it deserves.

Agreed. Its arguably the MOST important of the 2D games from a story perspective.

yeah, I'm pretty happy they're finally doing an official remake. the original is great but it's very very dated, and I know plenty have missed it

I know when I played the others I was lost on a lot of the story so this will be good

Do you think NINTENDO of all people isn't going to check if it sucks or not?

Talk about the kiddie games they make all you want and I'm up to back you up, but at least they never fail at quality control.

It's really good. I'm a huge fan of Zero Mission's gameplay and he nailed it perfectly. The updates to the map and such were very interesting too.

The map is a bit of a mess, which is apparently one of the first things fixed in both remakes.

I DO NOT want a remake of Super or Fusion

Super and Fusion could both benefit from a HD facelift.
http://www.dsogaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/super_metroid___depths_of_tourian_by_elemental79-d5z66m9.jpg

Fusion would benefit greatly by adding a few intentional sequence breaks and eliminating most of the one-way traps. Far too often does getting mauled by a boss mean the only path is "git gud", while being forbidden to go back and hunt for missed pickups, outside of completely restarting.
Seriously, fuck that spider thingy.

Yeah I'm super excited about the remake. I have tried playing metroid 2 and it is just not very accessible. Same as metroid tbh. I couldn't stand that either. But zero mission was an amazing remake. Hoping this will be the same.
