Open world more like boring girl

Breath of the Wild is probably the last one I'll ever play. I'm so done with the genre, at least for now.

Yes because the more open the world the less detailed it is

The Shenmue series does it perfectly. It's "open-world" but really it's closed-world and SUPER detailed. The first game especially, you only play in a small town in Japan and I don't think there's ever been a more detailed game. And these are games that were released almost 20 years ago.

More disillusioned by the fascination with them.

They're great when done properly but what you know maybe the new Tetris and Breakout don't need to be open world.

Depends

Detailed semi-open is GOAT

Fuck huge open world like GTA, I don't care for anymore. Saints Row 2 was the pinnacle

Yes. Open world games are always full of emptiness, even Witcher 3's wasn't impressive to me. I would much rather have a linear, story-focused experience.

The only open world I'm waiting for is Xenoblade 2, because it's gonna do both non-linear exploration and linear storytelling perfectly like the first game did

I never get this argument. Do some people really expect something to do in every square inch of an open world game?

I think the argument sorta goes, if you have an empty space, just don't put it in there.

As much as people hate the Koroks, the Korok seed made exploring empty spaces actually have reward. Some open world games don't even have small menial tasks on every corner, and it's shocking and boring

Getting to that point, yes. It's very tough to do an open world game right, and most companies are hopping into it without figuring out how to keep them decent.

Didn't people love Breath of the Wild? So, no, I don't think it should be reserved for any one game series or genre. As long as shooters and RTS games aren't doing it, I'm cool with most genres giving it a shot. You can still have a story driven game while also allowing for open world exploration. Not sure why those would be mutually exclusive.

GTA gets old pretty quickly, too. You can only do so many suicidal acts and massacres til you get bored of them :P. The recent GTAs have been worth it for their single player experience more than the exploration aspects imo

Sick of open world games? No.

Sick of every company trying to do open world games or turn established franchises into more open-worldy type games? Yes.

Doing something new and different with your series to get more people into it doesn't make it better or fresh just because, "Hey, everyone likes Skyrim, hur dur."

Leave that shit to companies that have made it their bread and butter, and do something else. I want more creativity in this industry.

I've really, really tried to like this kind of game, because so many people seem to love them both online and my friends IRL, but I just can't get into any of them. Tried Breath of the Wild, various GTA games, Elder Scrolls, etc, just doesn't keep my attention. It's like... I recognize how great it is and what a cool accomplishment it is that such an expansive game has been made, but it just isn't very fun for me.

BOTW definitely burned me out on them for now, I haven't been able to get into HZD because of it. But I'll eventually bounce back into it. Been busy with a handful of large Lego sets that came out recently anyway.

I should have been more clear: I loved Breath of the Wild very very much, but because I spent so much time with it, I don't really find open world that great anymore.

Open world factually isn't a genre, and only haters are treating it as such tbh.
