I don't really care about them, but this feels like evidence that they continue to not care about the Western market.

Because they have nothing to show for it

We already know what's coming out for the rest of 2017, so why bother?

Also why are these conferences booked at such odd hours? Bethesda's event starts at 12am on the East Coast.

Because the conferences are kind of antiquated. It's better for the consumer for them to do a Direct.

Now if only they learned how to make a good Direct.

Oh them messing up the Wii controls live like six years in a row might have contributed lol.

Evidence that their controller designs are hilariously bad.

That being said. WiiU and Switch Pro Controllers look really nice. I was thinking of getting both of them for PC at one point.

After the Wii, they weren't interested in he "gamer" audience, they wanted the "non gaming casual" audience, so they deemed an E3 stage show a waste of time and money.

I think Nintendo continually underestimates the impact of E3 announcements though as it's time people who don't normally do so are looking up gaming news.

This is why trade shows exist. Computex just happened last week and it completely destroyed Intel in the hardware enthusiast world because they announced a bunch of "Hardware DLC" with their new platform. On the opposite side AMD is getting a huge boost announcing Threadripper after the success of Ryzen.

Marketing is always important. My company has a huge Trade show in a few weeks and we're basically demoing the product we've had in development over the last year.

Nintendo doesn't care about press at this point?

The biggest reason is that pretty much everyone they would have speak at a press conference doesn't speak enough English to be able to present without a translator. It's just much, much easier for them to record a Direct and have a translation dubbed over it, as well as being more engaging for the audience because they don't have to wait for a translator to catch up. Especially where you consider that, for online audiences (the vast majority of viewers), the only real difference is that the people you see talking between trailers are in front of a green screen instead of on a stage, and that's pretty meaningless.

That's not true at all. The whole point of the "U" in the WiiU's name was the idea that it was going to be a system for "You, the core gamer." Their failure to engage that audience with the WiiU was due to other factors than a casual-centric attitude (note also that it was 2013 when they stopped doing the conferences, well after the Wii's casual audience had lost interest) Deeming E3 a waste of time and money was for factors other than the audience, especially where the press conference at E3 is more often tailored for shareholders and other industry folks (who love to see things that will sell to hordes of casual gamers) than core gamers.

From my understanding the Japanese have a certain way of marketing/selling things and the American branch is just supposed to follow suit without really questioning things, so it all comes out kind of weird. But even by Japanese standards they come off as a bit out of touch.

Yea from my experience in the tech industry, all of these tech departments have marketing people just to go to trade shows and present stuff. I have seen videos of our company's marketing department give presentations and rarely do we have people like head of R&D do any of the presentations (usually just to shareholders).

this is reflected by the larger multi-nationals in the computer hardware industry, and I have seen every big tech company but Nintendo do this.

They're going to get press either way. Plus their tree house live event is more in depth on game coverage than a conference and they can interview the developers too.
