This happened mid 1600 century. then the napoleonic code in 1804 changed it to 15 for girls and 18 for boys. Poe was born in 1809. and by the time he married her i am sure the code was widely adopted by then. As for the cousin thing that didn't happen in the US tell 1880's and didn't start getting widely adopted tell 1920's. So yes uinderage marriage and 1st cousins is a new trend that happened in only the passed 200 years. Less time then how long long the united states has existed independently. If you minus the boys from the girls, the minimum amount that males are over the age group is 5488. This is also assumed all those married in the age groups were in the same group. So we can't really know how many but it is only 31,644 girls of the age of 15-17 that get married. Which i am sure is a small percentage of the total american population of 15-17.
