NYT and HuffPaint both had Clinton's chances of winning at a very high % because their aggregates had her winning a majority of electoral votes based off of state polling that had her anywhere from 2-5% in the lead in several states she lost. Nate Silver had a decent breakdown of the potential flaw in this. His model iirc was 73-27 Clinton's favor (a 1 in 4 chance for Trump) but he emphasized that NYT and HuffPaint's models were very flawed because they assumed that one polling error would not relate across states with similar demographics, and the polling error that occurred in the midwest did carry from state-to-state, hence Trump hit the perceived 27% chance because polling in Midwestern states was, for reasons I haven't personally studied yet, flawed. His model iirc was 73-27 Clinton's favor (a 1 in 4 chance for Trump) but he emphasized that NYT and HuffPaint's models were very flawed because they assumed that one polling error would not relate across states with similar demographics, and the polling error that occurred in the midwest did carry from state-to-state, hence Trump hit the perceived 27% chance because polling in Midwestern states was, for reasons I haven't personally studied yet, flawed.
