In fact, with the official announcement that we'll formally begin on July 14th, we may be wrapping things up not long before Burnham's story begins! Whether you're excited or terrified at the prospect of Discovery, there's new televised Trek on the horizon for the first time since halfway through the George W. Bush administration, and that's something special. *"How does this work, anyway?"* Gawrsh, I sure am glad you asked, Mirror Me! So, everyone who participates in the project will compose ranking lists of the major characters they're familiar with (more on that shortly) and once the topic series premieres on July 14th I'll create a new thread and we'll all post our rankings gradually. Write-ups are strongly encouraged, but not expressly required. The goal here is to produce fun chatter between project members as we move through the project over the course of a few weeks time. If you're new to the Trek character rankings here on Board 8 but you're familiar with the Mass Effect character rankings, it's essentially the same deal. Meanwhile, I'll be in control of a spreadsheet which charts the rankings per-character. At the end of the first phase, we'll move into the comparably shorter (but arguably more exciting) second phase where I'll slowly reveal the "official Board 8 hivemind" rankings for every included character. It's a matter of weighted averages. It's fun. *"Sounds cool, but I've only seen ___ so I guess I can't participate?"* Nah, you can. Here's the thing, lads and lassies. I'm a diehard Star Trek fan, but I get it -- only certain quarters of the franchise harbor genuine mainstream popularity. For everyone out there who can tell you his or her top five favorite Garak moments, there are twelve more people who have never heard of this "Garak" but they know who Kirk is and they understand the phrase "beam me up, Scotty" and they've seen some funny Picard memes. So this is how it works. In order to participate, the only requirement is that you can comfortably rank one of the five major casts. For instance, last time we ran this scene, pjbasis was only able to rank TOS. In fact, I believe this still applies to him -- and that's fine. The weighted averages on the spreadsheet will help to even things out per-character. So as a result, we can safely expect the most write-up representation surrounding TOS and TNG, and probably the least for ENT, and that's OK. *"So uh, what do you mean 'major characters'? As you can see, we lump the Kelvinverse movies (hey, they have an official name now -- they didn't have one last time!) in with the OG (read: "Prime") crew. The first time we ran this joint, there were only two movies totaling roughly 4.5 hours for Abrams' cast. Now there are three movies and ~6.5, but frankly, that still ain't enough and chances are that if and when we do this a third time we'll keep on lumping. There's just so much more time spent with everyone else, and plus, there's usually at least someone whose only exposure to the franchise is the new movies, anyway. *Star Trek: The Next Generation* (1987-94/1994-02) Jean-Luc Picard, William Riker, Data, Worf, Deanna Troi, Beverly Crusher, Geordi LaForge, Wesley Crusher, Tasha Yar, and Katherine Pulaski compose the 10 main cast. (Yes, Pulaski gets in but there's a chance your favorite bit character doesn't. Them's the rules.) Along with TOS, TNG represents the most recognizable of the Star Trek shows, and it enjoys endless airing in syndication to this day. Its storytelling approach largely follows the TOS standard of episodic viewing, but it begins to experiment with a few sporadic arcs as well. *Star Trek: Deep Space Nine* (1993-99) Benjamin Sisko, Kira Nerys, Odo, Jadzia Dax, Miles O'Brien, Worf, Julian Bashir, Quark, Julian Bashir, and Jake Sisko compose the 10 main cast, but because Worf is main cast on TNG as well, DS9 brings 9 new characters to the table. This show is highly popular among fans who desire a more serialized approach, with several main series arcs that are (mostly) handled deftly. As such, it's often regarded as the most "modern" Trek in approach. DS9 also features a sprawling cast of fully-developed recurring characters, so don't be surprised if plenty of slots on the recurring list are taken up through here. *Star Trek: Voyager* (1994-01) Kathryn Janeway, Seven of Nine, The Doctor, B'Elanna Torres, Tuvok, Tom Paris, Chakotay, Neelix, Kes, and Harry Kim compose the 10 main cast in UPN's Borg-blasting flagship series about a crew lost at the far edge of the galaxy, which tends toward episodic but experiments with serialization to an arguably greater degree overall. Voyager has a bit of mainstream recognition courtesy of the character of Seven of Nine -- and the fact that many of us grew up with UPN. (Fun fact: DS9's pretty well-known in certain metro areas, where it too aired there.) *Star Trek: Enterprise* (2001-05) Jonathan Archer, Charles "Trip" Tucker, T'Pol, Phlox, Malcolm Reed, Hoshi Sato, and Travis Mayweather compose the 7 main cast in this, the last of the five (soon to be six!) shows, which ran from 2001-2005 before suffering an early cancellation.
