the 2014 agreement was nations not in compliance would work towards it over the next decade, not right away

my perspective is "they are not in the forefront of development of air superiority or missile defense tech so why do we even give a shit what they spend"

they exist as a place to put Aegis Ashore and base F-35s/F-22s

It's actually impossible for most of the nations in NATO to spend 2% of their GNP on defense, they simply don't have the economy and funds for it

These countries are not choosing to spend less on defense and have America pick up the slack, it's that they literally can't spend more

Trump and Trumpettes do not understand this though

I mean, I would think all of the obstructionism from Congress since 2010 would do that. The whole debt ceiling debate (remember that?) in 2011 was a pretty good indicator of how things were starting to go.

Does anti-terrorism stuff not count in their defense spending? I thought I read that it did, which seems to be something Europe needs to be focusing on right now.

True but this one needed to happen to drive the point home without fail. Maybe us as Americans will get smarter about our politics now...but I doubt it.

This did not need to happen, and in no way could you argue that that lesson makes all of the terrible stuff happening worth it.

It doesn't help matters when its supporters also can't seem to.

It's being pushed by my country's government, despite huge public concern, and many of the arguments put forward as to why it will benefit us boil down to "Uh... we can't explain, but just trust us, it'll be great".
