And it seems legal as well. You just dont get as much with free account. But still, i remember when you had to go to specialty stores to buy dvds for it and it wasnt cheap.

I love that, but I have a subscription to Netflix, Hulu, and Prime anyway.

I have been going back and fourth on a crunchyroll subscription, but so far have resisted.

I don't get how anime creators even make money anymore.

In Japan they have significantly more merchandise, tie-ins, events, and sponsorship. Here, I don't even think they earn that much money. That's why there's like basically no anime geared equally towards a Western audience. I'm sure somebody here will say an example, but even then, there are not nearly as much merch compared to Japan

Crunchyroll and Funimation have the widest selection of anime, much bigger than those sites, especially so since they made their partnership official and they've been sharing titles. CR has been adding subs of Funi shows, while Funi has been adding dubs and even making new dubs of CR shows. If you like anime and primarily watch anime subbed, a CR subscription is a fantastic deal for how much anime is on the site. Likewise for Funi if you primarily watch dubbed.

If you already had subscriptions to those other sites for non-anime reasons and don't see enough unique anime on CR/Funi to justify the purchase, then that's understandable. But at least look through the CR/Funi library and see how many anime they have that you would want to watch.

Most anime these days are just ads to sell more of the manga or light novels they're based off of, so they make money off those sales. A truly original anime doing well and making money is a rare sight these days. I mean, they do happen, but they're rare.

Are all sites legal? Just one i use seems to have a huge selection with virtually no draw backs. I use adblock as well so maybe thats why.

If you go with VRV package do you get full access to both sites content?

I've been meaning to look into that.

Is VRV cheaper than having separate CR/Funi subscriptions?
Can I still watch CR/Funi on all of the same devices as I can now?

the VRV bundle is $10 so its a few bucks cheaper than having two subs. you also get a few other channels and you can probably still use the same devices.

https://help.vrv.co/hc/en-us/articles/215116623-VRV-Premium-and-Bundle-FAQ-Details
Bundle:

Crunchyroll
Funimation
Rooster Teeth
Cartoon Hangover
Geek & Sundry
Nerdist
MONDO
Tested
...
What devices is VRV available on?

VRV is available on the Web, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Chromecast, iOS phones/iPads, Android phones and newer Roku devices. More devices will be announced as they become available.

free account should be the same as free crunchy/funi so it doesnt really matter unless you also want to watch the other stuff thats on VRV.
