The game itself was VASTLY improved by Reaper (even tonally, it was better), but no expansion could undo the hammy camp of the base game.

Not saying D1 and D2 were actually legitimately scary, but they at least played a lot with Lovecraftian themes of insanity and creatures/things beyond what mortal man was supposed to witness. Your character overcame odds, as opposed to being a superhero triumphing over their monologuing comic book antagonists...

TL;DR: Diablo 3 is a good game but I'm STILL upset about them turning The Butcher into Stitches and I don't think I'll ever be whole again

I actually agree with that. I felt like Diablo 2 was a lot more grotesque and unsettling and all that, and Diablo 3 was more cheesy fantasy shit. I expected a lot more darkness than I got, at least in the aesthetic.

still a great game though, cant wait for the necromancer so I can play through the story again. but I do wish that it was a lot darker and more gothic and all that

fantastic game both mechanically and animation wise

shitty in just about everything else, especially max level content and unique item design

yeah even things that were supposed to be really brutal, like those scorpion-looking enemies that are actually human corpses mutilated and twisted into shape, don't strike any sense of horror or dread into anyone. the gameplay being so fast-paced and horde-centric doesn't help either.

I've been playing D3 for years and I never knew that was what they were. That's a really good concept, though, but yeah, like you said it's SO fast-paced that you won't catch it usually.

I hope D4 learns from that negative feedback about this aspect. Vastly different genres, but Dark Souls has done a much better job capturing that Tristram vibe than D3.

Both got better in Reaper, but yeah.

I never took too much issue with the animation, though I'd like the colors to be just a BIT more muted. It's mostly the tone that I take issue with.
