Many of them have this mentality that people who receiving benefits are lazy and leeches, but it isn't like there are tons of jobs out there AND in my in experience people receiving benefits DO WANT to work. But either nobody is hiring them, or the only jobs they can get pay very low wages with no healthcare.

If you're going to expect everyone to work, you need to provide the jobs and you especially need to make sure they all pay livable wages.

Cognitive dissonance and lack of empathy mixed in with some healthy tribalism.

OK I'll just give everyone a job with benefits that pays a living wage then.

Its just sort of become part of that sides identity....Politicians on the right would rather allocate that money towards things that can help them get richer, so they create this narrative of lazy entitled people mooching off everyone else....and their base goes for it because "LIBERALS" and all that...what's sad is a lot of every day people on the right benefit from social programs like that too and just don't seem to realize it. Its like all those people celebrating "Obamacare" going away, not realizing that they're actually benefiting from it...Yes, some people do abuse the system, but that's no reason to harm the majority that don't.

Well, it'd be nice if local governments worked with employers to help make this a reality.

It's usually a mentality that those people somehow fall under the category of parasites who never try to better themselves. Complete with complete disregard for the circumstances of said people.

I've met conservatives who -are- on benefits who will swear up and down that THEY need them, everyone else is just a bloodsucker. It's insane

They see one story about people abusing the system and get the thought that everyone is abusing it.

Yep because local governments have the funding to do this for every employer in their towns/cities.

Then the feds can help subsidize the weaker local governments.

What do you propose happening with poor people then out of curiosity?

Here's a good article about working and middle-class class whites voting against entitlements.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/whats-the-matter-with-maine_us_564fca49e4b0879a5b0b363f
Huffington Post, I know, but it's actually a more thorough overview than a lot of comparable articles. It highlights how the issue is partially an intra-class one and the role of voter participation (or lack thereof). Worth a read.

I expect people to work for a living. And don't give me the "there are no jobs" BS. The is a huge shortage in most trades and "shitty" jobs like truck driving. There are jobs, people just don't want to do them. When I got my CDL, I was literally hired by the first company I applied to. I worked there for two years and saved up to pay my way through college. There's no reason other people can't do the same thing.

Trucking companies will literally hire people with multiple DUI's because they're having such a hard time finding people willing to do it. I'm not saying everyone can/ should do exactly what I did. I'm simply using the industry I'm familiar with to illustrate that there are jobs out there, people just don't want to do them. There are other skilled trades with similar shortages and often times companies will even pay for your schooling to get licensed/certified.

You realize the manned trucking industry is teetering on imminent collapse of employment because of self-driving vehicles, right? This is going to happen in the next several years, and it will happen fast; I'm predicting that it could plausibly happen during this presidential term, or not long after. Any driving job is NOT secure long-term.

I think they know specific welfare abusers and are pissed at them, and want to punish them, and they assume most are like that.

I know some welfare abusers and they are some of the most pathetic people out there, but welfare still needs to exist for especially families with children and stuff
