I just drove next to some who kept doing this. Every time they got to a red light they would reach over and stop their car. Then fire it up when it went green. Do they think this will save them gas? Isn't this killing their starter?

I assume they think it's saving them gas despite the fact that it's uses more gas to start the engine again than to keep it running. So in other words

Apparently newer cars can do this on their own and it actually saves a tiny bit of gas.

Some cars are equipped with auto start/stop technology. I would personally hate this with a passion and disable it if possible.

My car does that automatically.

Yeah it's annoying as hell. It's nice in some situations, but seems random in when it wants to turn off. A button or something would be better.

Are you sure they just didn't have a hybrid? My mom has one and it turns off automatically at stops. It's not a new thing.

Hybrids and other cars with stop-start don't completely shut off the engine: they place the engine in a safe state before cutting the fuel. When the accelerator is pressed, the combustion process picks up from where it was paused instead of going through the whole cranking process which wears out the starter.

Maybe it was a manual and they're stalling every time they come to a stop.

Eh, I can relate. Early during my undergrad my car had a pretty bad overheating problem, and it was especially bad when Dallas traffic would cause my usual 40 minute drive home to take hours. The only reason my car endured 100 degree summer temperatures stuck in hours worth of traffic is because I would literally kill the engine, shift neutral and roll down the slow highways to the lights and restart when needed.

Of course that all depended on my car's thermostat reading, as I'm sure stopping the car is damn stupid otherwise. It could have also been an overreaction on my part to my car blowing smoke due to overheating once before.

It didn't have auto stop. He was clearly turning the key to shut it off and then cranking it back up at every light.

New cars come with auto start stop. There should be a button to disable it, but I don't think it can be disabled by default.
