Many places don't care if you know the language so long as you have at least a bachelor's degree. Obviously, the more you have above that (and the more of the language you know), the better it is. Teaching English in East Asian countries is very much a "teacher-lite" kind of job. There are some opportunities for full-blown teaching as well, but those are fewer and far more stringent regarding qualifications.

I've family during this in Japan right now, and they love it. They needed to pass a certain level of the language proficiency exam to apply though.

Yeah, you don't even need to know their language. However, it's impractical to go to someplace like China and not be able to communicate with ordinary people.
