Do you think what Terry wrote was Racist?

Denver Sportswrite, Terry Frei of the Denver Post was FIRED after he was shared a racist Tweet following the Indianapolis 500 race when he was unhappy that driver Takuma Sato won!!

He said "Nothing specifically personal, but i am very uncomfortable with a Japanese driver winning the Indianapolis 500 during Memorial Day Weekend"

CEO Mac Tully, and Editor-In-Chief Lee Ann Colacioppo released a statement with "We apologize for the disrespectful an unacceptable tweet that was sent by one of our reporters. Terry Frei is no longer an employee of the Denver Post. It's our policy not to comment further on personnel issues. The tweet doesn't represent what we believe nor what we stand for. We hope you will accept our profound apologies"

He deleted it soon after but not before others saw what he posted and ROASTED him

Ricky Davila said "Nothing specifically personal, but i am very uncomfortable with your racism. I'm sure many would agree with me #Indy500"

He did nothing to quell the backlash as he replied with "THIS is what Memorial Day is about. Dave Schreiner's death in Battle of Okinawa. Not for squeamish or "sensitive""

He was referring to American Football player David Schreiner who was killed in WW2

A user said "Are you saying Takuma Sato killed Dave Schreiner in the Battle of Okinawa, and then wo the Indy 500 on Memorial Day to mock him?"

Terry deleted that one as well and apologized with a grovelling apology and said he's ANGRY at himself and there was no constructive purpose in saying it...but the Denver Post still booted him as he dug a hole for himself.

Sato was the first Japanese Driver to win the Indy 500 beating out 3 time winner, Helio Castroneves from Brazil.

Do you think what Terry wrote was Racist? let's see what people think.

Terry - Beggar

There isn't really any other way to take it.

The best argument you could make is that it's xenophobic, rather than racist.

I have no strong opinion. The quote seems to be based on nationality and Japan was responsible for sending many of our brave soldiers to the grave, but at the same time it's not like the driver is old enough to have even participated in that killing nor was the incident recent. As such, the objection is stupid. Should he have been fired? Fuck if I care. Was it racist? It seemed purely nationalist -- since the objection was the affiliation to a nation -- rather than the driver's race. Honestly, I thought this would be about a racist joke about Asian drivers.

What an idiot.. even his apology makes it so clear he hates Japanese people because his father fought in world war 2.

Kinda this. It would be like saying that somebody is racist against Americans. Clearly it's a nationalist dislike rather than a racial one.

Whoops I voted "yes", it's clearly an insensitive and xenophobic comment but not racist.

Trying to decide if it's racist or xenophobic or nationalist or whatever seems silly

Let's just call it stupid

And that makes it so much less hateful right?

You're sort of glossing over the real issue here.

It's not a hate issue, it's a stupidity issue. We haven't been at war with Japan for 70+ years now and, during most of that time, they've been an ally. While there are more long-lived Japanese than long-lived Americans, pretty much everybody who supported attacking the US is still long-dead. If it was something more recent, it *might* be understandable but Japan's gone through 3 or 4 generations in most families since then.

Hey Terry, sorry to have to tell you but if the Yanks were better, the Asians wouldn't have won.
You might have had a different outcome at the Indy500 as well. ^_^
