I was fully convinced that there would be some glimmer of hope, and went slack-jawed when I read "THE END"

the Appendix on Newspeak being so large feels like a deliberate deception to the reader's expectations

But skip that long ass speech that would take a day to finish.

I have only heard bad things both about Atlas Shrugged's prose and the message it tries to deliver

Now you know why I stopped mid-book after someone spoiled it.

I thought 1984 was a children's book until about halfway through.

I read 1984 on a NAVY deployment and it reminded me of the NAVY.

The blue coveralls, not being allowed to speak your mind out of fear of persecution, no displays of affection, the constant contradictory opinions of the people I worked for..

Ugh.

I can't get any non-biased opinions on Atlas Shrugged.

I own the book though so I should just read it myself I guess

she advocated for Laissez-Faire Capitalism and went on to die while on welfare.

as long as you recognize that her central belief - that it's heroic to be a self-centered douchebag - is completely wrong, there's no harm in reading it.

though, yes, the writing itself is pretty atrocious too

*sigh*

her premise that everyone acts in their own self-interest is philosophically contentious and biologically wrong. Anthropology and archaeology have repeatedly shown that humans practice mutualism - Darwin and Kropotkin, two evolutionary scientists, have shown mutualism in action

she claims that A=A, which is easy enough, but then she basically leaps directly to the conclusion that laissez-faire capitalism is the best system for everyone - unsupported, even by her own definition of logic.

Max Stirner is a good alternative - egotism is much more consistent, both internally and with reality
