Vanilla monster have no effects

Effect monsters are their namesake

Ritual monsters require having that card in your hand along with it's ritual spell card and a total amount of monsters to tribute.

Fusion monsters require a fusion card and the correct material listed on said card

Synchro monsters require a tuner monster and enough monsters to match the level requirement

Xyz monsters require 2 monsters of the same level matching the number of ranks

Pendulum monsters require scale numbers to be at least 1 number higher than their total level

Link monsters require at 1 or more monsters of any level or rank in order to be summoned or another Link monster with the same link requirements

Like, in terms of design, actual use in the game, or both?

I think fusion cards have the coolest base design (ultra rare fusions in particular look amazing bc of the gold/purple contrast), though I always remember favoring useful/rare standard effect cards. Synchros/other kinds of cards that were introduced in the 5D generation don't appeal to me at all & pretty much killed my interest in Yu-Gi-Oh collecting back in the day - don't get me wrong, I'm sure they add a lot of needed depth to the series, but I guess I'm just kinda jaded. :/

One thing I will say is that while I never liked ritual cards that much, Fortress Whale is probably my all-time favorite Yu-Gi-Oh card from a design standpoint:

Synchro monsters are my favorite category overall, but a lot of my all-time favorite cards are just standard Effect monsters.

My #1 is a tuner though, so that ties in with Synchro summoning.

Nope, they started a massive power gap war that's turned the game into who can make the most unbreakable board and stop you from playing first, This is the effect of the Link monster by the way
You can target monsters on the field and/or in any GY(s), up to the number of monsters in a Mutual Link with this card (Quick Effect); return them to the hand. This effect can only be used once while this card is face-up on the field. If a monster this card points to is destroyed by battle or sent to the GY: You can Special Summon 1 monster from your hand.

They were ideas but lack of a leash to keep them all in check and Konami's greed has completely destroyed the desire for new players to join in thus the massive success of Duel links which has none of those post GX era methods
