Whenever I complete a job application it always asks if I have been fired or terminated from a job. Seems like that is very important to employers....

Would you hire a person with a record of poor performance?

And it's hard for people to change if not given opportunity.

You can either do what's sensible or have a little faith.

One positive note is that future employers might be more accepting if you don't bad mouth your previous ones no matter how much you hated them.

That sounds like good advice.

Truth be told when they contact your past employer, they can't give any specific details about why you were let go or why you left unless you put someone in the know down as a reference and they talk. If a place you apply to decides to contact your last job all they can say is "yes he did work here from x to y".....now that may vary from state to state so look up the law where you are applying.

I've been "fired" once because of poor communication, but it was within the first couple days of working there so I just don't bother listing that job on my resume

Yes, they can, but if 45 people apply for the job, you're not going to bother with that one that has that stigma.

Same.

The office was full of ridiculous drama that I did my best to stay out of. When someone leaked something to HR and they got involved, apparently they all collaborated to blame it all on me so save themselves. Me, being the naive employee trying to stay out of it all, denied to HR that anything was wrong in the office at the time. That, coupled with everyone pinning it on me (unbeknownst to me), ended up with me getting fired.

It wasn't that hard, though, to just wipe the job from my resume. Fortunately, I was still in school at the time so I just describe the gap as "focusing on my studies".

Well, I can't see anything good coming out of it. Who's going to say "Wow this guy was fired, I'm going to hire him right now!" The negative effects of it may be overstated though.

I would personally just try to keep the details as minimal and as vague as possible and NEVER say anything bad about your previous employer.

Just say some generic shit like "I wasn't quite fitting in and the management and myself had different ideas of what was expected of me."

just say you had personal shit going on. The interviewer probably won't believe you but they pretty much have to take your word for it.

how long were you working at the job you got fired from? if it won't make a huge gap in your employment history just leave it out

and some places are desperate and will hire anyone, I've had to before

Correct. Most have a policy where they will only confirm you were employed and nothing else.

Legally speaking to cover their asses they usually only confirm that you were employed, the dates you were employed, and what your position was.

Which makes it probably the second most pointless thing an employer can ask you, next to "what was your previous salary?" It's like, why the fuck do you care? You've already budgeted a salary range for that role and probably even published it on the job boards, and either you think I can do the job and hire me, or you don't. So don't look for excuses to pay me less based on a different employer's salary requirements. Really pisses me off.
