To be fair, it would be an easier pill to swallow for non-Republicans if the Republicans were consistent with small government, but that isn't the case.

- Reproductive rights
- Drug use policies
- Religious-based laws (i.e. gay people can't adopt)

To be fair, when most Republicans say they want smaller government they're mostly talking about fiscal policies. Of course they want bigger government when it comes to the social issues they care about, there's no way to enforce it with smaller government.

Medicaid is small government. It's run by states individually.

What you have here is Big Government (Trump/Federal) restricting states rights.

By telling States that their funding will be based on enrollment numbers, and that they will bear more responsibility in management as a result? The ACA forced States to rely more on Federal government for funds thanks to eligibility changes and 'have insurance-or-penalty' rules that bloated Medicaid enrollment numbers.


If people choose to opt out of purchasing insurance because it's not mandatory anymore, the blame for lower numbers is squarely on the fault of whatever required them to get insurance against their will in the first place.

the SS cuts are to disability, which Trump promised to cut

of course he said he would do it by getting rid of waste and fraud, where you can argue that most of these cuts will hurt people who legitimately need the program

Well, I guess letting the poor people die is one way to get healthcare costs down. Kind of sucks but it does work. I mean, they can't use up any state/federal funds if they're dead. So then there is more money to go around for all the not-dead people.

Reminds me of that short story, "The Lottery." :o I think a lot of the GOP platform is inspired by that story, honestly.

Why not? A large number of people would die without Medicaid coverage. Healthcare is extremely expensive and it's unlikely groups, like, say - disabled people - have the money available to spend on health insurance, which is also very expensive.

the way to talk about this is to ask whether or not we're going to allow hospitals to let people die

expanding medicaid reduces both ER usage (decreases healthcare costs by reducing the usage of expensive medical procedures) and uncompensated care (reduces premiums because costs aren't passed on to everyone else)

there's only upside to medicaid, fiscally speaking, unless we literally are going to let people die
