It's an old city (by American standards, anyway). There wasn't much by way of city planning when it was developed, so the streets are all narrow and winding in every direction. Lends itself to a confused, claustrophobic feeling.

Lots of great food, though. Particularly North End and Faneuil Hall area. Hope you enjoy your time!

If you have a sweet tooth, check out Mike's Pastry or Modern Pastry. Some people prefer one over the other, but I'm not so discriminating when it comes to sweets lol

An ESPN personality recently said Boston was the one city that he was called a racial slur. So I do believe Boston could be scary.

My understanding of their road layout is that it was designed by cows. i.e. old cow paths were what became paved roads in later eras. I realize that the truth may be more accurately something like "designed by the people who herded cows" or something (and even this assumes that this isn't just some urban myth), but its always an amusing thought.
