I got enough money to put whatever BoA's minimum is for an account to not get fees. What other cons are there about big banks? Why should I use credit unions over BoA? I have a gut feeling, without doing ANY research, that credit unions are like small businesses and if something happens like fraud, they won't do much about it. Everytime I had a problem with something involving a bank, my problem is taken care if either through phone or in person in a bank. Any other info that would be helpful would be great.

Nobody in their right mind would use a credit union if they did a worse job than large banks at taking care of your money. On average, a credit union should provide equal or superior service to banks, but it helps to ask people around you that use credit unions if they would recommend theirs to another person and why.

the credit union I just joined is pure garbage

Made me wait 10 full calendar days for a card, that I can't even use because they didn't send me a PIN, and of course they're only open from 8:30 to 3PM M-F when any adult that can even register for it is at work, so you either have to take time off or use your whole lunch hour just to go to the damn bank. I'm gonna close this account and just stick to my bank.

I can't even call because again, they're open at the same time we open, and close a full hour and 30 minutes before the state offices close, so if I could call, I'd have to do it on one of my breaks or lunch breaks.

But I guess that's why they say this credit union is good for saving money, because you'll never get to it. I don't even know if they sent me a real debit card or not but I'm going to raise hell on Monday over the phone.

If you travel a lot a big bank is probably better

Ideally you should have both and swap money between the two as needed

Tbf if you travel you should just be using credit or cash anyways.

Meh I wouldn't want to carry cash while I'm traveling though I'd like to use cash for things.

I agree credits probably bests though I'd supplement with a debit card that I can withdraw from frequently without fees

I really don't want to support the cynical shit that fucks up the country that the big banks do though.

I've had Bank of America since 2009 and they've pretty much always refunded fees when I call. They've returned a $41 payment a few months ago when I called them from a website I didn't know about. They have ATM's everywhere.

I plan on staying with BoA.

No ATM fees, you can withdraw from any other union, they're just as protected as any other bank...

They have pretty terrible interests rates, though.

I still prefer them.

Just depends where you're traveling. In the US nah there's no need, but in some countries or cities you're not gonna get anywhere with a card.

Here's an example of someone that didn't do a lick of research into their available local credit unions to see which one best fits their needs or works for one of the large banks bleeding customers to a good credit union and has been given the task of slandering credit unions when people ask about them.

I have Rutgers and Middlesex County Credit Union, I was pretty much forced into the Middlesex one by my mom so she could have my bill money transferred to her account, I don't know what the problem was with just handing her the cash but I'll be looking into a better option

I just checked, guess I got it backwards. Credit Unions generally have higher interest rates. Guess my credit union just sucks for interest.
