a Change.org petition accusing ABC of “shoving liberal ideals down the throats of the viewer” had over 245,000 signatures as of Wednesday afternoon. The petition’s creator says they “will no longer be watching any ABC shows” until “Last Man Standing” is renewed.

No it was cancelled because for 6 seasons it's been produced by 20th Century Fox and ABC just paid them a per episode fee and then collected all the ad revenue, but that contract expired after season 6 and from here on out ABC would have to take over production and instead of doing that they just canned it.
And for some reason conservatives are crying about it and saying it's just the liberal media trying to push their agenda and silence conservatives or some bullshit like that. Nevermind that ABC let it run 6 seasons and assuming it was a traditional network 22 episode season that's over 100 episodes as well.

It's not a matter of being able to afford it, it's a matter of it even being worth it. Look at it this way, they effectively had a money machine where they did nothing but pay Fox a flat fee, air it, collect the ad revenue and then pocket some profit.
But then if they have to actually start making the show that adds a lot more layers to it. They probably decided that from a business perspective that it wasn't worth what they'll get out of it for what they'll have to put in it.
It takes over 3 30 second ad spots just to cover Tim Allen's salary for the show, let alone the rest of the cast and production costs.
Let's be honest, if there was a lot of money to be had they'd air it regardless of it being controversial, and if not some other network would pick it up if ABC is just leaving this massive money maker on the table in order to look good.

I know it might be shocking that they actually have people who's entire job it is is to determine if things are worth the time and financial investment.

Plus, let's not forget about what Allen said about 2017 Hollywood in response to being a Conservative on Jimmy Kimmel...that couldn't have pissed off company executives at all!!!

There are two major factors to consider. First all broadcast networks, not just ABC culled off most of their shows that were not produced in-house. Even if they were at ratings that would otherwise been renewed. This is typically because there is minimal after-run revenue to be generated off of licensed shows and in an era where broadcast ratings decrease every single year, revenue from streaming and syndication is more important than ever. On the flip side of this, there are several in-house produced shows that had ratings that probably would have got them cancelled that got renewed this year. Last Man Standing was a licensed show and its production rights were about to be turned over to ABC. The production of the show wouldn't be cheap as shows get more expensive as they get older and and if ABC was going to put the money into new production, it might as well be for a show they have full ownership of and not just from season 7 on.

Second, ABC has shifted it's Friday focus from sitcoms to drama for the upcoming season. As a result, all of their Friday sitcoms were cancelled, not just LMS.

Finally while, Disney is doing fine overall, ABC's been dropping faster than any other broadcast network in recent years, so they don't actually have the resources to pay for expensive to produce shows unless the ratings are really in their favor. While LMS had pretty decent ratings, it would be considerably more expensive to produce than most of their other sitcoms.
