I'm not sure I've seen a single positive thing said about it. Even before all the shitty reviews I kind of figured I'd never watch it anyway, knowing what kind of humor those guys are into. I can deal with that in small doses and in free videos, but I'm not gonna pay to watch that for an hour and a half.

Is it just bad because it's campy, or is it also bad at being a good B movie?

It's okay but if you don't ever see it, you're not missing out.

I feel like the movie was the very clear observable point when James started to get burnt out on this stuff.

It's okay

It's nothing like his usual AVGN videos, though.

Do you mean that about the movie itself, or that after the movie he was over it since he accomplished one of his biggest life goals?

Kind of. You can tell he doesn't want to do the Nerd anymore. But he can't really give that up. Also this movie more or less killed his chances at making length feature movies.

He pretty much already has. I just looked it up, he only had five episodes each in 2015 and 2016. If you were to remove those five episodes, in a vacuum I imagine the channel would have still made enough money those years for them to get by. I suppose if he actually quit, people might leave the channel since it's the promise of AVGN that counts. But let's be honest, people still sticking around for AVGN and expecting anything out of it probably aren't the most scrupulous or demanding of fans.

If I were James I'd totally phone it in, having a partner like Mike. Mike seems like he's perfectly content creating a bunch of low-effort videos that now make up the meat of the channel. All James really has to do is show up for one James and Mike video a week, which basically just amounts to playing video games and talking as Mike does all the editing and I think possibly all the setup too.

Curious, do you even go to the channel these days?
James has been pumping out more than James and Mike. He just had that "Mandela effect movie quotes" series (3 parts), has been reviewing movies and even just did a top 50 favorite movies. He's also done book reviews, like The Wizard of Oz.

Yeah, it's nothing nearly as complicated as AVGN gets but he's still doing his own things.

I know he does that stuff, but James and Mike is the only "regular" thing he's really part of. And pretty much the only gaming thing besides AVGN. Granted, James is probably better suited to talk about movies, and he usually does well with it, but it's just not super interesting to me or why I got into the channel. Even though Mike is probably more qualified to talk about games, I'd still rather see James do it.

Half of that was taken straight from older videos.

The film is an interesting one. For me as a big fan of James's work, not just AVGN, the quality of it wasn't as important as the journey. He made a film that was way too over ambitious for a filmmaker of his level and that was the whole point. He had an opportunity to live out a dream of his that he would probably have never had another opportunity to do being the niche internet personality that he is.

In that sense, the actual making of the film was a lot more interesting and I think whether the film was objectively the best thing ever, worst thing ever or something in between, it didn't matter as much as seeing him create the B-movie he always wanted to with all the filmmaking techniques and ideas he had talked about over the years that he liked and appreciated coming to fruition on a large scale and then being able to actually premiere it in theaters.

It was a great journey and one of the best things he included on the home media release other than the awesome making of featurettes was a live audience reaction track from the premiere because it demonstrates why it was all worth it. I think showing it in theaters and getting to hear and see those reactions to his work meant more to him than whatever people thought of the film overall. Is it flawed? Yes. Does it have some good stuff? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Just depends what you as a fan take away from it. For me after years of following his work it was something that I appreciated for the effort he put in as a filmmaker. That's how I'll always view this film which is a unique circumstance. Creation over content.
