Just downloaded all security updates for Windows 7 through Windows Update, but not the non-security Windows 7 updates, and I've fully updated MSE, am I safe? I haven't updated since Windows 10 was being given away for free, and I heard some of the non-security updates install Windows 10 ads onto Windows 7, is this true and if so, which updates should I avoid? If a non-security update is required to prevent this virus, which one? Finally, msn says the virus only spreads through email attachments, while CNN says it can just happen without clicking or doing anything, which is right?

this ransomware worm is a direct result from the leaked NSA tools.

it uses exploits even microsoft had no idea about. they've since patched those exploits, but you have to update your computer to get the patch.

and there's a lot of people who don't do that, or even can't do that. so this is hitting places pretty fucking hard.

because it's a worm, which means even if one computer on a network gets it, other computers on the network are also likely to get it even if they aren't being used.
